Job summary

Northrop Grumman in Elkton, Maryland seeks a Solid Rocket Motor Thermal Analyst Engineer – level 3/4 to advance propulsion system analyses. You will perform thermal and CFD studies, validate models, and prepare technical reports for internal and external customers.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Under minimal direction, conduct thermal analyses across propulsion products.
  • Develop thermal/CFD models, select boundaries, material properties, and validate results.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations for customers.
  • Mentor less experienced staff and provide technical leadership.
  • Support IPT leads to ensure technical and cost execution.
  • Collaborate with customer technical contacts and teams.

Northrop Grumman is in need of a Solid Rocket Motor Thermal Analyst Engineer – level 3/4 to work at its Elkton, Maryland facility.

Northrop Grumman Propulsion Systems and Controls (PS&C) facility in Elkton, Maryland began solid-propellant rocket operations in 1948. Today, the Elkton PS&C facility designs, develops, and produces solid-propellant propulsion and ordnance systems in programs professionally managed for a wide variety of Government and commercial customers. The facility also serves as the hub for offsite engineering and test facilities in Ronkonkoma, NY and Palm Beach Gardens, FL.

Elkton, Maryland is located on the Upper Chesapeake Bay, midway between Philadelphia and Baltimore. Responsibilities:

  • Under minimal direction, conduct thermal analyses in support across all Northrop Grumman, Propulsion System and Controls product lines. These simulations include development of thermal or computational fluid dynamic models, gridding, selection of boundary conditions and constraints, selection of applicable material properties, selection of appropriate simulation code and methodology, and performing model validation
    • Common types of analyses include: thermal analysis of rocket motor case insulation, nozzles, and thermal protection systems; CFD analysis of rocket nozzles, valve systems, case internal flow, posttest assessment of hardware and anchoring model to test data.
    • Independently develop methodology and mathematical models to match the physics of the system under evaluation including proper analysis methods/tools, proper boundary conditions, and appropriate material properties
    • Interpret analytical results and develop recommendations pertinent to system improvement.
    • Provide technical assessments of test hardware and test data including validation of analysis
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations of work product to both internal and external customers
  • Provide technical mentorship and assistance to less experienced staff
  • Take on technical and project leadership in improvement and product teams
  • Support propulsion and subsystem IPT leads to ensure technical and cost execution of each system component.
  • Form close working relationships with the customer technical community and specific customer technical points of contact.

Level to be hired will depend on demonstrated skills, experience, education, and competency.

Basic Qualifications for Principal Engineer (level 3):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in STEM plus five years of related experience or Master’s degree in STEM plus three years of related experience.

  • Knowledge of system modeling tools such as STAR CCM, ANSYS, NX solid modeling software, and/or Matlab/Simulink

  • Prior experience in rocket propulsion, heat transfer, thermodynamics, or compressible fluid mechanics

  • Ability to obtain a Secret Clearance which requires US Citizenship as a pre-requisite

  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and present analytical results in both oral and written formats.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, writing, presentation, and critical thinking skills.

Basic Qualifications for Sr. Principal Engineer (level 4):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in STEM plus eight years of related experience or Master’s degree in STEM plus six years of related experience.

  • Knowledge of system modeling tools such as STAR CCM, ANSYS, NX solid modeling software, and/or Matlab/Simulink

  • Prior experience in rocket propulsion, heat transfer, thermodynamics, or compressible fluid mechanics

  • Ability to obtain a Secret Clearance which requires US Citizenship as a pre-requisite

  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and present analytical results in both oral and written formats.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, writing, presentation, and critical thinking skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree in Aerospace Engineering or Mechanical Engineering preferred
  • Current Active Security Clearance
  • Prior experience in solid rocket motor design and analysis
  • Prior experience modeling high temperature environments, ablative materials, composites
  • Prior experience with STAR CCM, ABAQUS, CFD++, or ANSYS FLUENT

Primary Level Salary Range: $108,800.00 - $163,200.00

Secondary Level Salary Range: $135,800.00 - $203,600.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
