Socket.dev in Manassas, VA is seeking a Software Systems Engineer to support the standup and maintenance of development and test labs for the Cybersecurity team serving U.S. Navy Submarines. This on-site, full-time role requires DoD Secret clearance and U.S.

citizenship. You will assemble equipment, build servers with COTS/GOTS software, validate requirements through tests, and coordinate with facilities and vendors.

Qualifications

Active DoD Secret clearance required.
Ability to assemble and test computer equipment.
Strong MS Office skills (Visio, Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
Networking knowledge: UDP, TCP/IP, ICMP and encryption.
Analytical/problem-solving ability is essential.
High attention to detail and motivation.
Good written and verbal communication skills.
Basic Linux CLI knowledge.
Reading C/C++/Java source code is a plus.
5+ years Submarine Combat Control Weapon System experience or BS in related field.

Responsibilities

Assemble test racks with components, servers, switches, KVMs.
Cable interconnections within the rack and labs.
Build servers with COTS and GOTS software; configure switches.
Control equipment movement and tracking for government and company assets.
Support lab planning (layout, power, cooling) and coordinate with facilities.
Support BOM generation and hardware ordering including lead time tracking.
Assist vendor/supplier for repair/ replacement/ RMA of hardware.
Conduct informal and formal tests to validate requirements.
Communicate project issues to management as necessary.
Install and checkout IA software and provide testing support at other sites.
Analyze requirements docs to develop validation methods.
Assist development of test engineering docs (plans, procedures, reports).

Job description

Description

We are seeking a Software Systems Engineer to join our team in Manassas, VA. In this role, you will be responsible for supporting the standup and maintenance of development and test labs for the Cybersecurity team supporting U.S. Navy Submarines. Success in this position will require a mix of both technical and social skills. This position requires attention to detail and hands‑on purchase, assembly, and standup of computer equipment in both unclassified and classified labs. The candidate will be working with cutting edge tools and technologies for CI/CD. A great work ethic and motivation are essential.

This is a full‑time, on‑site only position. The annual base salary is $111,493.00 –$123,687.00, with final compensation based on experience and skills. U.S. citizenship is required, and candidates must have an active Department of Defense Secret security clearance at the time of hire.

Requirements

You’ll be responsible for:

Assemble test racks with components, servers, switches, KVMs, etc.
Cable interconnections within the test rack and external connections to the lab in an organized fashion.
Build servers with COTS and GOTS software, configure switches, etc.
Controlling equipment/property movement and tracking (both government and company).
Support new lab planning (layout, power, cooling, etc) and working with facilities to ensure all needs are met.
Support Bill of Material generation and lab hardware ordering including lead time tracking.
Support engineering if/when a hardware issue/failure is identified and working with the vendor/supplier to repair/replace/RMA failed equipment.
Conduct Informal and Formal Tests as required to validate all planned testable requirements.
Communicate project/program issues to management, as necessary.
Install and checkout IA software as well as provide test and troubleshooting support at other testing site locations.
Analyze current requirements documentation to develop methods and descriptions for validating requirements through test and other means.
Assist in the development of new test engineering documentation such as test planning documents, test procedures and test reports.

Required Skills:

Active DoD Secret clearance.
Ability to assemble and test computer equipment is required.
High level of knowledge of Microsoft Office: Microsoft Visio, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
Understanding of networking, protocols, e.g. UDP, TCP/IP, ICMP, encryption, etc.
Demonstrable evidence of an analytical approach to problem solving is a *must*.
Must be highly motivated and excellent attention to detail.
Good written and verbal communication skills.
Basic Linux command-line knowledge.
Ability to read C, C++, and Java source code helpful but not required.
5+ years’ of Submarine Combat Control Weapon System experience or
BS in one of the following disciplines: Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technician or a related field, or
5 years of experience working in one of these disciplines.
Cybersecurity certification a plus.
