CAE is seeking a Software Support Engineering Specialist I to support the design, modification, integration, maintenance, and qualification of software and hardware systems in flight training devices and simulation environments. Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Aerospace, or related technical discipline.
  • Two-year technical degree with equivalent relevant experience.
  • 1-3 years of experience coordinating projects and managing technical work activities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Working knowledge of UNIX, Linux, and/or Microsoft Windows operating systems.
  • Working knowledge of FORTRAN, C/C++, and/or Assembly programming languages.
  • Ability to travel occasionally (less than 10%).

Responsibilities

  • Perform software and/or hardware design activities using established engineering standards to support flight training device modification requirements.
  • Install, verify, test, integrate, and document new or modified software and hardware designs.
  • Assess software and hardware modification requirements to improve training realism and correct system discrepancies or anomalies.
  • Convert technical requirements into workload estimates based on project scope, complexity, and resource needs.
  • Perform scope analysis, design activities, implementation, testing, and final system integration for assigned projects.
  • Support Technical Services personnel in troubleshooting and resolving complex simulator software and hardware issues.
  • Design, develop, and document operational, maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Install and maintain software and database updates related to navigational and Flight Management System (FMS) components.
  • Coordinate initial and recurrent qualification activities and ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Manage device evaluation reports and discrepancy status reports in accordance with regulatory standards.
  • Develop, maintain, and present documentation required for regulatory evaluations, device modifications, and qualification activities.
  • Track, support, and verify timely resolution of discrepancies identified during regulatory evaluations.
  • Maintain Master Qualification Test Guides (MQTGs) and conduct periodic Qualification Test Guide (QTG) test runs.
  • Coordinate and manage moderately sized technical projects.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, guidance, and mentorship to entry-level and intermediate team members.

Job description

Software Support Engineering Specialist I

The Software Support Engineering Specialist I is responsible for supporting the design, modification, integration, maintenance, and qualification of software and hardware systems used in flight training devices and simulation environments. Working independently while applying established engineering standards, this role evaluates system modification requirements, improves simulator realism, resolves technical anomalies, and supports regulatory compliance activities. The incumbent translates technical requirements into workload estimates, performs scope analysis, and executes design, implementation, testing, and integration activities for simulator projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform software and/or hardware design activities using established engineering standards to support flight training device modification requirements.
  • Install, verify, test, integrate, and document new or modified software and hardware designs.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Aerospace, or a related technical discipline; OR a two-year technical degree combined with equivalent relevant experience.
  • Between 1-3 years of experience coordinating projects and managing technical work activities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Working knowledge of UNIX, Linux, and/or Microsoft Windows operating systems.
  • Working knowledge of FORTRAN, C/C++, and/or Assembly programming languages.
  • Ability to perform software and hardware technical activities with minimal supervision.
  • Effective written, verbal, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Customer-focused approach and ability to collaborate across functional teams.
  • Ability to travel occasionally (less than 10%).
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in sustained sitting, standing, stooping, squatting, and walking positions.
  • Ability to safely climb ladders and work on equipment at heights up to 30 feet.
  • Ability to work safely in confined spaces for reasonable periods of time.
  • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination required for use of tools and equipment.
  • Ability to maintain situational awareness while working around complex machinery capable of multi-axis movement.
  • Ability to work in indoor environments with temperatures between 55F and 65F.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Experience in flight simulation, simulator systems, and/or the aerospace industry preferred
  • Experience analyzing and implementing real-time flight simulation systems.
  • Experience in aerodynamics and physics.
  • Advanced project management experience.
  • Experience supporting flight training device qualification and regulatory compliance activities.
  • Experience maintaining MQTGs and conducting QTG test runs
