Job summary

Advanced Micro Devices is seeking a senior SMTS engineer to join the Datacenter Application & Ecosystem Engineering team. You will influence architecture and lead cross-functional efforts across hardware and software boundaries to deliver critical platform solutions.

You will collaborate with architecture, silicon, firmware, OS, and cloud teams to define strategy, lead reviews, and drive execution while mentoring others and shaping future datacenter technologies.

Qualifications

THE ROLE:

We are seeking an experienced software systems engineer to join AMD's Datacenter Application & Ecosystem Engineering organization. This position requires a highly motivated individual who thrives in a fast-paced environment and enjoys solving complex system-level challenges across hardware and software boundaries. The ideal candidate will combine strong technical expertise with leadership skills to drive critical initiatives that influence product quality, customer success, and future technology direction.

As an SMTS engineer, you will work closely with AMD architecture, silicon, firmware, operating system, virtualization, cloud, and ecosystem partners to enable next-generation datacenter technologies. You will help define technical strategy, lead cross-functional efforts, influence architecture decisions, and ensure successful execution of key engineering deliverables. This role offers the opportunity to make a broad impact across AMD's datacenter portfolio while helping to shape future platform capabilities.

THE PERSON:

This AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) Datacenter Application & Ecosystem Engineering team is looking for a senior technical leader who is passionate about solving challenging systems problems and driving innovation across multiple engineering disciplines. You will serve as a technical mentor to other engineers, guide architecture discussions, influence long-term technical direction, and lead efforts to resolve complex platform issues.

The ideal candidate possesses strong Windows Operating system debugging skills, excellent communication abilities, and a proven track record of collaborating across organizations to deliver results. You should be comfortable working independently on ambiguous problems while also driving alignment among stakeholders at all levels of the company. The successful candidate will stay current with emerging industry technologies and provide consultative guidance to both engineering teams and senior leadership.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Lead the solution, development, validation, and optimization of software solutions supporting AMD datacenter products and ecosystem initiatives.
• Drive technical investigations involving complex interactions between hardware, firmware, operating systems, virtualization technologies, and cloud environments.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineers across the organization through design reviews, code reviews, troubleshooting assistance, and knowledge sharing.
• Partner with architecture, silicon design, firmware, BIOS, operating system, and cloud teams to identify and resolve system-level issues.
• Develop and execute performance characterization, benchmarking, workload analysis, and optimization strategies.
• Design and implement automation frameworks that improve engineering productivity, validation coverage, and product quality.
• Lead root cause analysis efforts for complex customer-reported issues and help drive timely resolution.
• Evaluate emerging technologies and industry trends to help define future platform strategies and technical roadmaps.
• Create technical documentation, design specifications, and executive-level presentations that communicate findings, recommendations, and risks.
• Represent the team in customer, partner, and internal technical engagements as a subject matter expert.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on scalability, performance, reliability, and operational excellence.
• Work across multiple organizations to influence technical decisions and ensure successful delivery of strategic engineering objectives.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

• Advanced experience in systems software, platform engineering, operating systems, virtualization, performance engineering, or related areas.
• Strong understanding of x86 server architecture and modern datacenter platforms.
• Extensive experience debugging complex software and system issues using tools such as WinDBG, kernel debuggers, trace analysis tools, and performance profiling utilities.
• Experience with Windows Server, Linux distributions, Hyper-V, VMware, KVM, or other virtualization technologies.
• Strong software development skills using Python, C, and/or C++.
• Experience developing automation frameworks, validation tools, or performance analysis infrastructure.
• Experience running, analyzing, and interpreting system-level benchmarks and performance workloads.
• Working knowledge of firmware, BIOS, device drivers, kernel subsystems, or hardware/software interactions.
• Experience collaborating with customers, ecosystem partners, cloud providers, or independent hardware/software vendors.
• Demonstrated success leading technical projects and influencing engineering decisions across organizational boundaries.

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline.
• Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field preferred.

LOCATION:

• This role is open to Austin, TX or Bellevue, WA.
