Applicants must already be legally authorized to work in the U.S. Visa sponsorship/sponsorship assumption and other immigration support are not available for this position.
The Software Engineer Intern will join Lyric during an important period of technology modernization as we evolve our payment integrity platform, modernize legacy applications, build clean and scalable APIs, improve data performance, and prepare our technology for future growth. This 12-week internship is designed for a student who has completed their third year of a Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related university program and wants to apply their academic experience to real production software challenges. Working alongside experienced Lyric engineers, the intern will contribute to meaningful software engineering projects across full-stack development, APIs, cloud technologies, databases, automated testing, and AI-assisted software development. A key component of the experience will be learning how modern engineering teams use AI coding tools and agents to accelerate development while maintaining high standards for code quality, security, testing, and human judgment. Prior professional software engineering experience is not required.
Essential Job Responsibilities
- Contribute to the design, development, testing, and delivery of software supporting Lyric's healthcare technology platform
- Work alongside experienced engineers on modernization initiatives involving modern .NET, APIs, databases, cloud technologies, and web applications
- Assist with developing and testing RESTful APIs and microservices that support scalable application architecture
- Contribute to front-end development using technologies and frameworks such as Angular, React, JavaScript, or TypeScript
- Gain hands-on experience working with relational databases, including SQL Server, and learn how engineers approach data modeling, queries, application performance, and data integrity
- Use modern AI-assisted development tools to support coding, debugging, refactoring, test creation, documentation, and other software engineering activities
- Learn how to effectively evaluate AI-generated code, identify incorrect or incomplete output, and apply human judgment before incorporating AI-generated work into a codebase
- Participate in code reviews and receive feedback from experienced engineers on coding practices, architecture, testing, maintainability, and performance
- Develop automated unit and integration tests and learn how testing is incorporated into modern software development and CI/CD practices
- Assist with identifying, debugging, and resolving software defects and performance issues
- Gain exposure to Azure and/or AWS and understand how modern applications are developed, deployed, monitored, and operated in cloud environments
- Learn how observability, structured logging, monitoring, and application telemetry help engineering teams understand application health and troubleshoot issues
- Work collaboratively with Engineering, Product, UX, DevOps, QA, and other stakeholders to understand business requirements and translate them into working software
- Apply secure software development practices and learn how engineering teams protect sensitive healthcare and customer information
- Participate in Agile development activities, including sprint planning, technical discussions, demonstrations, and retrospectives
- Maintain clear technical documentation for the software and projects you contribute to
- Complete a defined internship project or meaningful product deliverable and present the solution, technical approach, results, and lessons learned to Engineering and Technology leadership at the conclusion of the internship
Required Qualifications (By start of Internship)
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a closely related technical field
- Expected to have completed the third year of undergraduate study prior to the start of the internship
- Completion of university coursework in programming, software development, data structures, algorithms, databases, or related computer science disciplines
- Foundational programming experience gained through coursework, academic projects, personal projects, hackathons, research, or other university activities
- Familiarity with at least one modern programming language such as: C# Java Python JavaScript/TypeScript C++ Or a comparable object-oriented programming language
- Foundational understanding of object-oriented programming, data structures, algorithms, and software development principles
- Basic understanding of relational databases and SQL gained through coursework or project experience
- Familiarity with source control concepts and tools such as Git/GitHub
- Interest in using AI as part of the software development lifecycle while understanding the importance of validating AI-generated work
