Job summary

North Star Imaging (NSI), a global leader in 2D digital radiography and 3D computed tomography equipment, is seeking a Software Engineering Intern to build and improve software for DR and CT systems. This on-site, paid internship in Rogers, Minnesota, targets juniors and seniors pursuing an Engineering degree.

You will design, develop and document software, use Visual Studio and GitHub, work with hardware interfaces, present your project to NSI leaders at summer’s end, and gain exposure across

Qualifications

• Pursuing an Engineering degree with at least a 3.0 GPA.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to juggle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
• Leadership and teamwork experience from any setting.
• Solid working knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop and support software for use in X-ray imaging and computed tomography.
• Create technical design, implementation and training documentation describing new software functionality.
• Use tools including Visual Studio, GitHub, and issue tracking for software solutions.
• Communicate developments to internal/external customers via presentations and reports.
• Develop and support software interfaces to hardware devices (UIs, X-ray detectors, sources, cameras, motion components, robots).
• Support new and ongoing engineering and planning.

We are looking for a Software Engineering Intern to develop and improve state-of-the-art software for digital radiography (DR) and computed tomography (CT) equipment. You must be a Junior or Senior in college pursuing an Engineering degree. This full-time, paid internship is located on-site in Rogers, Minnesota. You will have opportunities to attend networking events, both within NSI and across ITW's divisions in Minnesota. At the end of the summer, you'll present your project to NSI business leaders, showcasing your contributions and impact.

What You Will Do

• Primary Responsibilities
  • Design, develop and support software for use in X-ray imaging and computed tomography
  • Create technical design, implementation and training documentation that describes new software functionality.
  • Use varied development tools including Visual Studio, GitHub, coding agents, issue and task tracking for implementation of software solutions.
  • Communicate new developments and findings to internal/external customers in the form of presentations, technical reports and patent applications.
  • Develop and support software interfaces to a variety of hardware devices: UIs, X-ray detectors, X-ray sources, optical cameras, motion components, robots.
  • Support new and maintaining engineering and planning.
• Secondary Responsibilities
  • As assigned by supervisor

What We’re Looking For

• Junior or Senior pursuing an Engineering degree with at least a 3.0 GPA
• Technical skill:
  • C++, Python or C#
  • AI Agent usage (Cursor, Claude)
  • GUI design (WinForms, WPF)
• Strong written and verbal communication skills — you can explain your ideas clearly, whether in an email, a meeting, or a quick Teams message
• Comfortable juggling multiple tasks and hitting deadlines, even when priorities shift
• A genuine eagerness to learn, paired with a proactive, can-do attitude — you ask questions and look for ways to contribute
• Leadership and teamwork experience from any setting — clubs, sports, group projects, part-time jobs, or other extracurriculars
• Solid working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
• Preferred Skills:
  • GPU programming (CUDA or OpenCL)
  • 3D graphics (OpenGL)
  • Image analysis, computer vision
  • Computed tomography
  • Data science

Compensation Information
