At Meta, we're not just building products — we're shaping the future of digital privacy. We're committed to embedding privacy into the core of our products, and to redefining how privacy is handled in the digital world. This role in Privacy owns the interface between Meta's engineering organizations and the Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) functions that govern them. You will give engineering, product, legal and policy partners the domain judgment they need to make confident decisions under regulatory constraint. You will set technical direction across the organization for how privacy obligations are met, and build the centralized standards, frameworks and tooling that let the business execute at pace while meeting its obligations.Software Engineer (Technical Leadership) Responsibilities:Define and drive the multi-year technical vision and architecture for large-scale product systems, ensuring designs are reliable, extensible, and capable of evolving with business needsIdentify and solve the most complex, cross-cutting engineering problems across multiple systems and abstraction layers, including issues that span organizational boundariesEstablish extensible technical foundations, coding standards, and architectural patterns that improve consistency and delivery velocity across engineering organizationsLead cross-functional execution of org-wide technical initiatives, aligning stakeholders, managing dependencies, and driving outcomes against defined milestones and metricsDevelop and operationalize engineering excellence programs including reliability standards, performance guardrails, and quality frameworks adopted across teamsDeeply understand privacy, security, and integrity vulnerabilities relevant to product systems and build robust technical safeguards in partnership with compliance and policy teamsMentor engineers across the organization by providing candid feedback, customized coaching, and technical guidance on the most challenging system and feature design problemsCommunicate complex technical strategies and trade-offs clearly to audiences ranging from individual contributors to executive leadership, producing artifacts used as long-term referencesIdentify systemic issues and recurring failure patterns across the organization, developing invariants and architectural improvements that prevent entire classes of problemsRecruit and develop engineers with skills critical to the team's success, role-modeling technical and cultural standards that strengthen the broader engineering communityMinimum Qualifications:12+ years of experience designing, building, and scaling large-scale software systems serving high-traffic, production environments12+ years of programming experience with demonstrated ability to solve complex, cross-system technical problems through direct implementationExperience leading multi-year technical roadmaps and cross-organizational engineering initiatives from vision through executionExperience influencing technical direction across multiple teams and functions through written proposals, architectural reviews, and stakeholder alignmentExperience mentoring engineers across an organization and driving engineering culture improvements through programs, standards, and direct coachingPreferred Qualifications:Technical contributions to the privacy or security community (e.g., public research, blogging, presentations, industry standards work)Demonstrated ongoing AI skill development (e.g., prompt/context engineering, agent orchestration) and staying current with emerging AI technologiesExperience adhering to and implementing responsible, ethical AI practices (e.g., risk assessment, bias mitigation, quality and accuracy reviews)Demonstrated ability to integrate AI tools to optimize/redesign workflows and drive measurable impact (e.g., efficiency gains, quality improvements)Experience operating in a governance, risk and compliance or second-line-of-defense function (controls design, assurance testing, or generating evidence for external audit or regulatory examination), including working directly with regulators, external auditors, or counsel on technical mattersExperience interpreting regulatory, legal or control requirements and translating them into technical requirements, standards or automated enforcementExperience implementing or assessing the implementation of GDPR, CCPA, or equivalent privacy regulation at scalePrivacy understanding, data strategy, or AI domain expertiseExperience shipping products to many millions of customersExperience operating as the company-wide expert on a privacy domain, whether a product area or a problem area such as data deletion or retention, where engineers, Legal, Policy and senior leadership seek your guidanceExperience designing frameworks, standards or assessment methodologies that were adopted by organizations beyond the one that built themTechnical experience across other Privacy or Security disciplines, e.g., Application Security/Privacy, incident response, or adversarial testingAbout Meta:Meta builds technologies that help people connect, find communities, and grow businesses. When Facebook launched in 2004, it changed the way people connect. Apps like Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp further empowered billions around the world. Now, Meta is moving beyond 2D screens toward immersive experiences like augmented and virtual reality to help build the next evolution in social technology. People who choose to build their careers by building with us at Meta help shape a future that will take us beyond what digital connection makes possible today—beyond the constraints of screens, the limits of distance, and even the rules of physics.Meta is proud to be an Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action employer.
