Job description

Software Engineer/Team Lead - Code Plane [IC5]

Remote

Who we are

Everything is changing in how software gets built, and Sourcegraph is at the center of that transformation. With Code Search, Deep Search, and MCP, Sourcegraph is the world’s most powerful code intelligence platform that developers and agents rely on to navigate, understand, and operate on massive, complex codebases with speed and confidence.

Teams at companies like Stripe, Uber, and Dropbox rely on Sourcegraph to ship faster and with higher quality. We’re backed by a16z, Sequoia, and Redpoint, and proud to operate as a globally distributed team that values high agency, direct communication, and a deep love for developers and their craft.

If you want to contribute to infrastructure that empowers millions of developers to do their best work - join us.

We hire almost anywhere in the world but prefer someone in: Europe or East Coast USA. Working hours must overlap with CEST for at least 20 hours/week.

Why this job is exciting

The Code Plane team owns the Sourcegraph products that help developers and the agents working on their behalf take action on code, at scale, across large codebases. It builds products that use AI and products for AI. The roadmap and day-to-day technical decisions hinge on a solid experience with and a clear-eyed view of what AI models and agents are good at. A strong handle on AI is a hard requirement. We need a technical leader around whom this team rallies.

The team's surface areas include:

  • Batch Changes – our battle-tested execution layer for massive cross‑repo changes helps developers automate large‑scale code changes across all of an enterprise's repositories. It includes code review, CI checks, and merges.
  • Agentic Batch Changes – an outer‑loop agent that writes code‑modification programs and orchestrates agents to roll out changes across many repositories.
  • Code Monitors and Code Insights – “signals over code” products that notify, alert, and provide data‑driven dashboards for critical code changes.
  • src CLI – the command‑line surface that humans and agents use to automate Sourcegraph in their workflows.

The features your team ships are used directly by developers and agents. You’ll partner with Product, Design, Customer Engineering, and adjacent teams to turn customer pain into shipped product.

Within the first month you will
  • Build relationships and familiarize yourself with Batch Changes, Agentic Batch Changes, Code Monitors, Code Insights, src CLI by running them as a user and an agent would.
  • Meet cross‑functional partners and translate customer feedback into a concrete view of what the team should ship.
  • Join the on‑call support rotation.
Within the first three months you will
  • Own a meaningful slice of Agentic Batch Changes end‑to‑end and ship critical pieces yourself.
  • Be the technical lead for the roadmap, scoping and sequencing projects across the team's product surfaces.
  • Strengthen team practices around design, review, testing, and delivery.
  • Mentor teammates and build high‑trust relationships.
Within six months you will
  • Be recognized as the technical visionary for Code Plane, setting architecture, quality, and product trade‑offs.
  • Be known across the company as the person who deeply understands what customers and agent ecosystems need from Code Plane.
  • Set the direction of the team's roadmap with conviction and mobilize engineers to execute.
About you

You are a technical leader and software engineer who people want to follow. You set technical direction, make hard architecture and trade‑off calls, and keep the team unblocked. You translate fuzzy product input into a clear roadmap, scope with Product and Design, and decide what to cut. You tackle hard technical problems hands‑on and guide your team.

You have a strong view on coding agents, can ship AI‑centric products, and meet the other qualifications below.

  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience
  • A strong technical background, providing guidance on architecture, code quality, and trade‑offs
  • Proven experience building end‑user product features – ideally developer tools, AI/agent products, CLIs, or similar surfaces
  • Experience partnering with Product and Design to take features from idea to shipped, incorporating customer feedback
  • Customer‑facing experience: discovery calls, design partnerships, feedback loops
  • Experience shipping products for AI agents (MCP servers, agent SDKs, agent‑friendly CLIs)
  • Hands‑on experience reasoning about coding agents with strong opinions about best practices
  • Async‑first communication skills and experience working in a globally distributed remote team
Nice to haves
  • Fluency with Go, TypeScript/React (and ideally SvelteKit), GraphQL APIs, PostgreSQL, Docker/Kubernetes, and a multi‑service environment
  • Experience with developer tools, code intelligence, code search, or large‑scale code transformation/refactoring products
  • Experience with monitoring, alerting, or “signals over code” products
  • Experience designing and shipping pleasant CLIs for humans and agents alike
  • Experience as a Team or Tech Lead on a software engineering team
