Job summary

Vultr is seeking a skilled Software Engineer to advance our cloud storage products. You will work on the control plane and orchestration code powering Object, Block, and File storage across 30+ data centers worldwide.

The role emphasizes strong software engineering fundamentals, experience with storage systems, and collaboration across teams to deliver reliable, scalable platforms.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of software engineering experience focused on storage or distributed systems.
• Proficiency in PHP and Python for control plane and orchestration code.
• Solid knowledge of Linux/Unix and cloud storage architectures.
• Familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes; experience with open-source projects such as Ceph is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with Engineering teams to research and develop new storage features and address technical debt.
• Design, develop, and maintain storage control plane code in PHP, and orchestrate operations in Python.
• Contribute to the Ceph project to ensure reliability and performance meet customer needs.
• Design cloud storage solutions for Object, Block, and File storage and related workloads.
• Collaborate with internal and external teams to deploy new features and improve maintainability.
• Optimize and refactor existing codebases for performance and scalability.

The ideal candidate has strong software engineering fundamentals, experience with storage systems, and a passion for building reliable, scalable platforms. This is an opportunity to join our Storage team and contribute to the control plane and orchestration code that powers Vultr’s Object, Block, and File storage offerings across 30+ data centers globally.

Key Responsibilities

• Collaborate with Engineering teams to research and develop new features, respond to technical debt, and improve application performance
• Design, develop, and maintain storage-related contributions to our control plane written in PHP, and integrate orchestration code in Python to manage and automate cloud storage operations
• Contribute to the open-source Ceph project, ensuring its reliability, performance, and features meet our customers’ goals
• Design and contribute to cloud provider solutions for high-performance computing, AI training, and inference workloads, focusing on Object, Block, and File storage solutions
• Collaborate with internal and external teams to support the resourcing and deployment of new features
• Optimize and refactor existing codebases for performance and maintainability

Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience in software engineering with a focus on storage or distributed systems
• Proficiency in PHP and Python with experience developing control plane and orchestration code
• Understanding of cloud storage architectures and technologies
• Solid knowledge of Linux/Unix operating systems
• Experience with distributed systems and networking fundamentals
• Familiarity with containerization technologies such as Docker and orchestration tools like Kubernetes
• Problem-solving skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
• Communication skills and the ability to articulate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

Our Ideal Candidate

• Experience contributing to or maintaining large open-source projects, preferably Ceph
• A strong belief in documentation as a core aspect of engineering
• Experience with Linux and/or BSD
• Experience with configuration management solutions like Puppet and Ansible
• Experience with Ceph deployment, configuration, and optimization
• Experience with Test Driven Development
• Knowledge of other programming languages such as Go or Lua
• Familiarity with continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) pipelines
• Experience in developing and maintaining RESTful APIs

Compensation

$80,000 - $105,000

Final compensation will vary depending on years of experience, background/skill set, location, and applicable laws.
