Job summary

Consumers Energy is hiring a Software Engineer to design, develop, and maintain software applications using SAP development tools. The role collaborates with engineers, designers, and product managers to deliver scalable, reliable software.

The position may include on-call rotation for critical applications. Onsite work is required at One Energy Plaza in Jackson, MI, with relocation support for qualified candidates.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer, engineering or related discipline with 2+ years of coding experience.
  • Associate's degree in computer, engineering or related discipline with 4+ years of coding experience.
  • High School Diploma/GED with 6+ years of coding experience.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure high-quality code through a test-driven approach and debugging.
  • Apply clean coding principles and leverage automation to reduce manual work.
  • Design software solutions using latest tech, addressing performance, security, and maintainability.
  • Maintain full tech stack including OS, DB, and lifecycle planning.
  • Integrate vendor solutions via APIs and contribute to system architecture.
  • Mentor junior engineers and promote best practices in Agile development.
  • Lead by example in Agile practices and clean coding.
  • Align work with business objectives and organizational goals.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver business value.
  • Maintain end-to-end solutions and fix production issues.

The Software Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining software applications and systems. This role involves utilizing SAP development tools and technologies to create and enhance solutions that align with user needs and business objectives. The Software Engineer collaborates with cross-functional teams including other developers, designers, and product managers to ensure software is functional, scalable, and reliable.

The role could include placement on a paid on-call rotation to provide operational support coverage outside of normal business hours for critical business application(s).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ensure high-quality code through a test-driven approach, debugging, and adherence to industry best practice
  • Apply clean coding principles (TDD, CI, etc.) and leverage automation to reduce manual processes
  • Create and design intricate software solutions using the latest technology and best practices, incorporating non-functional requirements such as performance, scalability, security, and maintainability
  • Maintain the full tech stack, including Operating System, Database, and Application Lifecycle Planning
  • Integrate vendor solutions with APIs from the company's API repository and contribute to system architecture
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior engineers (Associates/Interns), fostering skill development and knowledge sharing
  • Lead by example in Agile methodologies and clean coding practices
  • Understand business objectives, context, and nuances, ensuring technical work aligns with organizational goals
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to drive business value through software development
  • Work on a team responsible for maintaining end-to-end solutions, including fixing production bugs and continuously improving software reliability
  • Other duties as assigned or may be necessary

Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in computer, engineering or related disciplinewith two (2) or more years of relevant coding experience

  • [OR] High School Diploma/GED with degree with six (6) or more years of relevant coding experience
Preferred Experience

One or more of the following skills will set you apart:

  • Experience developing and supporting solutions in SAP S/4HANA, including ABAP, RAP, CDS Views, Fiori, SAPUI5, BTP, and RISE
  • Experience developing and supporting solutions in SAP ECC
  • Experience with SAP HR technologies, including SuccessFactors
  • Experience integrating SAP SuccessFactors, SAP ECC, and SAP S/4HANA using APIs, OData services, SAP Integration Suite/CPI, or other integration technologies
  • Understanding of HR business processes such as employee lifecycle management, recruiting, onboarding, learning, performance management, compensation, and organizational management
  • Experience with the following non-SAP technologies would be considered a differentiator:
    • Proficiency in C# and .NET frameworks
    • Proficiency in front-end languages/frameworks (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, Next.js)
    • Experience with API management platforms (e.g., Apigee, Azure API Management, Mulesoft)
    • Experience with testing tools (e.g., Bruno, Postman, Blazemeter, Jmeter, Certify)
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Azure services (e.g., Azure AD, Data Factory, Logic Apps, Functions)
    • Familiar with Azure Generative AI services and methods (OpenAI, Cognitive Services, Speech Services, RAG model)
    • Familiar with Azure DevOps, CLI, PowerShell, and CI/CD
    • Familiar with API security (OAuth, JWT)
    • Proficiency in Python and experience with machine learning frameworks
