Job summary

Northrop Grumman is seeking a Front-End Software Engineer (or Principal) to support our Mission Experience team in El Segundo, CA (or Rancho Bernardo). You will design, develop, and maintain front-end applications for advanced Mission Management systems, collaborating with product, backend, and QA teams.

The role requires strong JavaScript/TypeScript, React, and Angular experience, Linux/Unix proficiency, and Agile practices.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in STEM and 2 years of related engineering experience; OR Master’s degree in STEM with 0 years of related experience.
  • Principal Engineer: Bachelor’s Degree in STEM with 5 years of related engineering experience; OR Master’s with 3 years; OR PhD with 1 year.

Responsibilities

  • Implement front-end interfaces from design using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Develop and maintain reusable front-end components and UI patterns.
  • Ensure responsive layouts and cross-browser compatibility across desktop and mobile.
  • Integrate front-end features with backend APIs (REST/GraphQL).
  • Collaborate with designers to refine UI/UX and ensure design-system consistency.
  • Write clean, well-documented code following team standards.
  • Participate in code reviews and apply feedback.
  • Perform basic testing (unit/component tests and manual).
  • Apply accessibility and performance best practices to user-facing features.
  • Work with product, backend, and QA teams to clarify requirements and deliver features on time.
  • Continuously learn and adopt new front-end tools and practices.

Northrop Grumman is seeking a Software Engineer/Principal Software Engineer - Front End to support our Mission Experience team. The team develops new autonomy solutions, creates and maintains in-house software, and incorporates it all in the digital environment. This is an exciting opportunity to push the limits of autonomy. This is an on-site position supporting our Research & Advanced Design Division in El Segundo or Rancho Bernardo, CA.

Accomplish

As a Front-End Software Developer, you will design, develop, document, integrate, test, deploy, and maintain front-end applications software in support of advanced Mission Management systems. You will have strong verbal and written communication skills and will be expected to operate independently with little oversight in a dynamic environment. You will be highly self-motivated, reporting information to leads. You will be expected to handle diverse assignments with efficiency, finding unique solutions and working in a very collaborative and fast-paced environment that continues to grow.

Key Responsibilities
  • Implement user interfaces from design mockups using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Develop and maintain reusable front-end components and UI patterns.
  • Ensure responsive layouts and cross-browser compatibility across desktop and mobile devices.
  • Integrate front-end features with backend APIs (REST/GraphQL), including error handling and loading states.
  • Collaborate with designers to refine UI/UX and ensure consistency with the design system.
  • Debug and fix front-end issues related to layout, styling, and functionality.
  • Write clean, well-structured, and well-documented code following team standards.
  • Participate in code reviews, incorporating feedback to improve code quality.
  • Perform basic testing of implemented features (unit/component tests and manual verification).
  • Apply accessibility and performance best practices to user-facing features.
  • Work closely with product, backend, and QA teams to clarify requirements and deliver features on time.
  • Continuously learn and adopt new front-end tools, frameworks, and best practices.
  • This requisition may be filled at a higher grade based on qualifications listed below.

  • This role may be filled at either the Software Engineer or a Principal Software Engineer level based on the qualifications below.**
Basic Qualifications
  • Engineer: Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline and 2 years of related engineering experience; OR a Master’s degree in a STEM discipline and 0 years of related engineering experience.
  • Principal Engineer: Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline and 5 years of related engineering experience; OR a Master’s degree in a STEM discipline and 3 years of related engineering experience OR a PhD degree in a STEM discipline and 1 years of related engineering experience.
  • Must have an active US Government clearance (with a background investigation within the past 6 years or enrolled into Continuous Evaluation).
  • Experience with Agile principles, processes, and tools
  • Experience with Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Angular or similar
  • Experience developing applications on a Linux/Unix operating system
  • Experience in designing user interfaces with a focus on human-computer interactions
Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or similar discipline
  • Ability to effectively communicate and present to program management and customers
  • Ability to effectively write technical documentation
  • Experience sharing knowledge, mentoring, and working in a collaborative environment
  • Significant experience developing object-oriented applications in Java, Javascript, Typescript, React, or Angular
  • Significant experience experience developing applications on Linux/Unix operating systems including proficiency with OS commands and shell scripting
  • Ability to debug, optimize code, and to automate routine tasks
  • Ability to obtain and maintain US Government Top Secret clearance

Primary Level Salary Range: $91,800.00 - $137,600.00

Secondary Level Salary Range: $114,000.00 - $171,000.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
