Job summary

Citi is seeking a skilled Java Developer to join our backend engineering team in Pune. This role focuses on building scalable Java services, RESTful APIs, and secure microservices with Spring Boot, while advancing AI integration using GenAI tools.

Responsibilities include designing robust data models, implementing CI/CD pipelines, and collaborating with product and frontend teams to deliver high-quality software. Prior Java experience and cloud familiarity are preferred.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in CS/Engineering or related field (or equivalent practical experience).
• 5+ years of backend Java development experience.
• Proficiency in Java 11/17+ and multi-threading.
• Experience designing RESTful Web Services and relational DBs.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain backend services and RESTful APIs in Java (Java 17+).
• Build and deploy microservices in Docker/Kubernetes/OpenShift environments.
• Design efficient DB schemas and integrate PostgreSQL/MySQL/Oracle, MongoDB, or Cassandra.
• Implement CI/CD pipelines and ensure code quality with tests (JUnit, Mockito).
• Integrate LLM/GenAI APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic) and GenAI libraries (LangChain4j, Spring AI).
• Collaborate with product managers and frontend engineers to translate requirements into solutions.

Job Overview

We are seeking a skilled and motivatedJava Developerto join our engineering team.

This is an exciting opportunity for a strong backend engineer who wants to maintain deep expertise in core Java technologies while actively building practical experience in the rapidly evolving field of Artificial Intelligence.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design & Development:Architect, build, and maintain high-quality, scalable, and secure backend services and RESTful APIs using Java (version 17 or higher) and the Spring Boot framework.
• Microservices Architecture:Develop and deploy microservices in containerized environments (Docker, Kubernetes/OpenShift).
• Database Management:Design and optimize database schemas, write efficient queries, and integrate with relational (e.g., PostgreSQL, Oracle) and non-relational (e.g., MongoDB, Cassandra) databases.
• CI/CD & DevOps:Participate in and improve continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines to ensure automated, reliable software delivery.
• Code Quality & Testing:Write clean, maintainable, and testable code. Implement comprehensive unit, integration, and contract tests (JUnit, Mockito).
• Collaboration:Work closely with product managers, system architects, and frontend engineers to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
• AI Feature Integration:Integrate Large Language Model (LLM) APIs (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic, or internal AI gateways) into existing Java applications to enable smart features like summarization, semantic search, or automated classification.
• Framework Utilization:Utilize modern Java-based GenAI libraries and frameworks, such asLangChain4jorSpring AI, to build Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines and agentic workflows.

Required Technical Skills

• Programming Language:Strong proficiency in Java (Java 11/17+ preferred), including deep understanding of multi-threading, concurrency, and object-oriented design patterns.
• Frameworks:Extensive experience with Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, Spring Data, and Spring Security.
• APIs:Proven experience designing and consuming RESTful Web Services.
• Databases:Solid experience with SQL (PostgreSQL, MySQL, or Oracle) and ORM frameworks like Hibernate/JPA.
• Build & Version Control:Proficiency with Git, Maven, or Gradle.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
• Familiarity with message brokers/queues (Apache Kafka, RabbitMQ).
• Prior experience building a basic Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) application or chatbot (even as a personal project).
• Familiarity with Python (for basic AI scripting or data manipulation) is a plus, though the primary focus remains Java.

• Demonstrated interest or minor project experience (academic, personal, or professional) involving Generative AI or LLM integration.
