Job description

Software Engineer

Company:Apellix

Location:Jacksonville, FL — On-site

Employment Type:Full-time

Reports to:Production Manager and Engineering Lead

About Apellix

Apellix designs and manufactures autonomous and semi-autonomous drones that put tools in the sky — power washing, spray painting and coatings application, and non‑destructive testing (NDT) inspection at height, so people don’t have to. Our systems are 100% U.S.-made, NDAA compliant, and U.S. Army-certified, and they’re deployed by customers in 21 countries across five continents.

The Role

We’re looking for a full-stack, platform-agnostic application developer to own the software our drone operators and customers touch every day: the desktop app (across PC and Mac), the Android controller app, and a customer portal and dashboard where job data lives. You’ll build the applications that take the data our drone sensors produce and make it useful, visible, and beautiful. Great UI/UX is important. The interfaces you build get used in the field, in real conditions, to run a real aircraft, and get reviewed by customers deciding whether the job was done right. They have to be easy-to-read and good-looking.

We’re looking for a software engineer who builds apps, launches them to customers, and maintains them as the product and customer base grow.

Some of What You’ll Do

  • Develop and maintain Apellix operator applications for Android, macOS, and Windows using Qt/C++, Python, R.
  • Design and implement frontend, backend, and cloud-based web applications, customer portals, and internal software tools.
  • Build scalable backend services and APIs supporting communication between drones, controllers, and cloud infrastructure.
  • Support and extend the PX4 flight control software stack across multiple commercial drone platforms.
  • Manage and maintain software for multiple commercial drone products throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Write production-quality, maintainable code and participate in testing, deployment, and release management.
  • Collaborate with robotics and hardware engineering teams to integrate and validate new platform capabilities.
  • Use Git and modern version control workflows for collaborative software development.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional experience building and maintaining production applications.
  • Experience building data visualization, reporting, or analytics features.
  • Experience developing desktop, Android, backend, and web applications.
  • Strong UI/UX skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Strong experience with C++, Qt, Python, R and/or application development.
  • Experience with PX4, QGroundControl, or similar robotics/embedded software.
  • Experience with Git, software testing, and production deployment practices.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Experience integrating and deploying machine learning models and features into production software
  • Strong server-side skills: backend services, APIs, and cloud infrastructure (AWS, S3, data storage), with experience scaling systems as usage grows.
  • U.S. Person status (E-Verify).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience integrating hardware devices over serial, USB, Ethernet, CAN, or similar communication interfaces.
  • Experience working with camera, image, LiDAR, or other sensor data.
  • Experience with computer vision libraries (e.g., "OpenCV") or image processing.
  • Basic familiarity with ROS or robotics software concepts is beneficial but not required.

Why Apellix

  • Build software that runs real aircrafts doing real work and the portal, dashboards, and apps that customers see every day.
  • Sit with the team building the drones, with direct impact on the product and on Apellix Intelligence.
  • Small, fast-moving team with real autonomy and ownership.
  • A differentiated mission: American-made, NDAA-compliant, Army-certified aircraft that take people out of harm’s way, trusted on five continents.
  • Salary commensurate with experience.
  • PTO and federal holidays.
  • 100% paid healthcare, which comes with free counseling and telehealth.
  • 401(k).
