Job summary

Google is seeking a Software Engineer, Infrastructure for the Public Sector in Reston, VA. The role targets mid-level engineers who will develop and operate highly scalable infrastructure for government-scale workloads, with opportunities to influence security and reliability across teams.

You will deploy, configure, and optimize air-gapped solutions like Google Distributed Cloud, manage core hardware, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to align timelines and technical goals.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
• 2 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages, or 1 year of experience with an advanced degree.
• 2 years deploying, configuring, and troubleshooting infrastructure or large-scale distributed systems.
• Active Top Secret/SCI security clearance and willingness to undergo a polygraph.

Responsibilities

• Plan and execute project work, manage priorities, and drive progress. Participate in system design for cloud expansion with senior guidance.
• Deploy and configure air-gapped solutions like Google Distributed Cloud. Install and configure core infrastructure: network switches, firewalls, block/object storage, servers, and HSMs.
• Identify deployment requirement issues and help the team course-correct. Triage infrastructure errors and address commonly escalated issues.
• Leverage scripting and automation to improve deployment, configuration, and management for air-gapped solutions, reducing systemic toil.
• Communicate deployment knowledge within and across teams. Coordinate timelines and objectives for assigned components.

Experience Level: Mid

Mid Experience driving progress, solving problems, and mentoring more junior team members; deeper expertise and applied knowledge within relevant area.

Minimum qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
• 2 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages, or 1 year of experience with an advanced degree.
• 2 years of experience deploying, configuring, and troubleshooting infrastructure or large-scale distributed systems.
• Must possess an active Top Secret/SCI security clearance, and the willingness to undergo a polygraph.

Preferred qualifications

• Experience working with Linux/Unix environments, Kubernetes, and network administration (LAN/WAN).
• Experience with infrastructure-as-code and automation tools.
• Experience managing core hardware components such as network switches, firewalls, storage systems, and HSMs in a data center environment.
• Understanding of Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIG), group policies, and hardening practices for secure environments.
• Ability to effectively communicate technical timelines and collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams.
