Google is seeking a PhD Software Engineer for Infrastructure in Sunnyvale, CA, with a 2027 start. You will build distributed, large-scale systems and AI-enabled infrastructure, with opportunities to switch projects as teams evolve.

As a PhD graduate, you will apply research to design and implement complex systems across product areas such as Cloud, YouTube, Search, and AI. We value bold problem solving, collaboration, and the ability to lead initiatives across the full stack.

Qualifications

  • PhD degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience coding in C, C++, Python, Java or Golang.
  • Experience in distributed systems, concurrency, multi-threading, or synchronization.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in or lead team projects to carry out design, analysis, and development of advanced systems across the stack, using your research expertise.
  • Write documents that set new technical directions. Contribute to existing documentation or educational content, and adjust content based on product updates.
  • Study, diagnose and resolve complex technical issues by analyzing sources of the issues and their impact across software, hardware, network, or service operations and quality.
  • Develop code, review code developed by other developers, and provide feedback to ensure best practices.

  • Experience with performance, reliability, systems data analysis, visualization tools, or debugging.
  • Experience coding in Rust.
  • Availability to start in a full-time role in 2027.
