Job description

The Software Engineer - Infrastructure role at Mercury in New York, NY is for an engineer who likes going deep, shipping often, and leaving systems better than they found them. Mercury's Infrastructure team is an enablement lever for the rest of the business, building scalable, secure, and maintainable foundations that the entire engineering organization builds on top of.

The Opportunity at Mercury

Mercury is building powerful financial services for ambitious companies. The Infrastructure team is currently expanding its platform features to make it easier for both agents and humans to deploy code — with security by default, observability by default, and systems that are easy to use and operate. All of this happens without compromising on speed: the team ships to production all day, every day, a testament to the strong foundations already in place.

This is a full-time position posted on October 4, 2026, with applications open through December 4, 2026.

What You Will Build

Your core mission is to expand the Infrastructure Platform to support the growing needs of the Engineering Organization. Day-to-day responsibilities include:

  • Platform expansion: Build infrastructure that is AI-friendly while remaining usable for human engineers — your users are humans and agents
  • Key infrastructure projects: Break down complex initiatives and define infrastructure strategy through detailed RFCs and technical specifications
  • Agentic infrastructure: Develop systems that let AI agents safely interact with infrastructure, complete with the right guardrails for both agents and the humans operating them
  • Broad infrastructure ownership: Maintain everything from networking to container orchestration, and work with product teams to enable their AWS needs
Must-Have Qualifications
  • 2+ years of AWS experience, with hands-on work in services like EC2, RDS, OpenSearch, ECS, and EKS
  • Strong Linux fundamentals, including knowledge of file systems, containers, and low-level operating system concepts
  • 2+ years of technical writing, producing detailed documentation, RFCs, and tech specs that communicate complex ideas clearly
  • Passion for cloud-native open source technologies, with comfort contributing code upstream
Ideal Candidate Profile
  • Regulated environment experience such as HITRUST or SOC2 compliance, ensuring security without sacrificing velocity
  • 2+ years in large-scale Terraform environments where many engineers contribute code in a scalable way
  • 2+ years writing code — Mercury is building an Infrastructure Platform from scratch, and there is plenty of code to write
  • Eagerness to learn and dive into hard problems with a helpful, collaborative mindset
Technology Stack You Will Work With

You do not need to arrive knowing every tool. Mercury cares more about strong fundamentals, curiosity, and the ability to go deep. Familiarity with the following will accelerate your ramp:

  • Cloud: AWS (EC2, RDS, OpenSearch, ECS, EKS) with a bias toward cloud-native open source tooling
  • Infrastructure as Code: Terraform, managed extensively across the organization
  • CI/CD: GitHub and GitHub Actions for version control and delivery
  • Observability: Prometheus, Grafana, OpenSearch, and OpenTelemetry to understand production behavior
Application Tips Specific to This Role
  • Showcase your AWS depth: Be ready to discuss specific architecture decisions, trade-offs, and scaling challenges. Mercury values engineers who go deep.
  • Highlight Terraform at scale: If you have managed Terraform with many contributors, emphasize how you handled module design, state management, and code review processes to keep things maintainable.
  • Demonstrate technical writing: Since RFCs and tech specs are central to this role, consider linking to public documentation, blog posts, or open-source contributions. This directly proves the communication skills the role requires.
  • Emphasize compliance awareness: In financial services, HITRUST and SOC2 compliance is non‑negotiable. Call out specific examples of how you balanced security requirements with engineering velocity.
  • Show curiosity about agentic infrastructure: Mercury is building systems where AI agents interact with infrastructure safely. Familiarize yourself with concepts like agent guardrails, orchestration, and safe deployment automation — side projects in this space will set you apart.

Mercury values diversity and belonging and is proud to be an Equal Employment Opportunity employer. All qualified applicants receive consideration without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, marital status, ancestry, disability, veteran status, gender identity, sexual orientation, or any other protected characteristic.

Mercury is a fintech company, not an FDIC-insured bank. Banking services provided through Choice Financial Group and Column N.A., Members FDIC.

If infrastructure that is secure by default, observable by default, and designed for people who want to ship sounds like your kind of challenge, there is a lot left to build — and Mercury would love to hear from you.
