Job summary

Horace Mann is seeking a Software Engineer III to join the Automation Engineering team, designing and building automation solutions to improve software quality and operational efficiency. This senior role expands into workflows, quality engineering, and enterprise automation across multiple applications and domains.

You will mentor junior engineers, influence technical direction, and help establish scalable automation practices while partnering with stakeholders across IT and business units.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of professional experience in software development, automation engineering, analysis, and coding.
  • 3+ years of experience working with complex systems, architectures, or application structures.
  • Proficiency across the software development lifecycle and modern engineering practices.
  • Experience building and maintaining automation frameworks for UI, API, and/or process automation.
  • Strong understanding of web technologies, APIs, scripting tools, system integration patterns, CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices, and version control.
  • Experience with system optimization, monitoring, and troubleshooting complex technical issues.
  • Experience developing automation solutions for testing, workflows, or operational processes preferred.
  • Familiarity with automation platforms, workflow orchestration tools, or RPA technologies is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable automation frameworks across testing, operational workflows, and business processes.
  • Serve as a technical subject matter expert for automation solutions supporting business-critical applications and processes.
  • Lead automation development efforts across the full software development lifecycle, including design, coding, testing, deployment, support, and optimization.
  • Build automation for UI, API, integration, regression, data validation, and business process workflows.
  • Evaluate and implement modern automation tools, frameworks, and technologies to improve efficiency and reliability.
  • Contribute to automation strategy, standards, engineering best practices, and technology roadmaps.
  • Partner with business stakeholders, QA teams, developers, and operations teams to identify automation opportunities.
  • Troubleshoot complex technical issues across applications, frameworks, and automation platforms.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers and promote a culture of ownership, quality, innovation, and continuous improvement.

This role expands beyond traditional test automation into broader workflow, process, quality engineering, and operational automation. The ideal candidate is a self-directed engineer who enjoys solving complex problems, influencing technical direction, and helping establish scalable automation practices across multiple applications and business domains.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable automation frameworks and solutions across testing, operational workflows, and business processes.

Salary Range:

$89,800.00 - $125,500.00

Salary is commensurate to experience, location, etc.
