Uber Technologies Inc. in San Francisco, CA, is seeking a Software Engineer II for the Eater Real Time Pricing team to design and implement surge pricing algorithms that keep the delivery marketplace healthy.

You will build real-time pricing and forecasting systems serving matching, courier pricing, and other downstream components, owning the lifecycle end-to-end with tests, monitoring, and on-call readiness.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of backend software engineering experience in distributed or real-time data processing.
• Experience with one or more OO or functional languages (Go, Java, Python).
• Experience designing high-throughput, low-latency services and translating problems into system design.
• Bachelor's degree in CS/Engineering or related field.
• Experience writing tests and monitoring to ensure production stability.

About the role and team

Engineering at Uber means building for real-world impact under real-world constraints. As a Software Engineer II on the Eater Real Time Pricing team, you will build the surge pricing algorithms that keep Uber's delivery marketplace healthy. Our systems produce real-time decision signals that other critical systems — matching, courier pricing, promotions — depend on every second. The team sits at the intersection of the supply and demand sides of the business: when our pricing is right, the marketplace balances; when it is off, consumers and couriers feel it within minutes.

The problems here are complex and the stakes are immediate. Demand spikes with weather, holidays, and events; supply shifts city by city; and our algorithms must respond in real time with imperfect information. We are looking for engineers who think in systems, care about correctness under load, and want a short line from their code to visible marketplace outcomes. What you'll do

• Design, develop, and maintain high-quality code for surge pricing and marketplace-health features of moderate complexity, with multiple system dependencies.
• Build and scale real-time pricing and forecasting systems that serve decision signals to matching, courier pricing, and other downstream consumers at high throughput and low latency.
• Own the software lifecycle end-to-end: from design docs through production rollout, debugging live issues, and managing incidents in a system where minutes matter.
• Collaborate across disciplines — Product, Applied Science, and Ops — to translate ambiguous marketplace problems into simple, robust system designs.
• Champion engineering best practices through quality code reviews, comprehensive tests, and strong monitoring of systems that must degrade gracefully under extreme demand.
• Navigate cross-team dependencies and stakeholder inquiries to keep pricing signals reliable across every city we serve.

Basic Qualifications

• 3+ years of professional software engineering experience in backend development, distributed systems, or real-time data processing.
• Proficiency in one or more object-oriented or functional programming languages (e.g., Go, Java, Python).
• Experience designing and operating high-throughput, low-latency services, and translating customer or business problems into system design.
• Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent experience) in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
• Experience writing tests to verify functionality and establishing monitoring to ensure code stability in production.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with marketplace, pricing, dispatch, forecasting, or other real-time decision systems.
• Familiarity with real-time data streaming (e.g., Kafka, Flink) or time-series forecasting pipelines.
• Experience identifying and reducing technical debt in high-load distributed systems.
• Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment on engineering trade-offs where algorithm behavior has direct business impact.
• Background in contributing to engineering culture through code review, documentation, or mentoring.

For New York City, NY-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD $171,000 per year - USD $190,000 per year.

For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD $171,000 per year - USD $190,000 per year.

For Seattle, WA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD $171,000 per year - USD $190,000 per year.

For all US locations, you will be eligible to participate in Uber's bonus program, and may be offered an equity award & other types of comp. All full-time employees are eligible to participate in a 401(k) plan. You will also be eligible for various benefits.
