Job description

About Upstart

At Upstart, we’re united by a mission that matters: to radically reduce the cost and complexity of borrowing for all Americans. Every day, we bring creativity, experimentation, and advanced AI to reshape access to credit, helping millions move forward financially with clarity and confidence.

As the leading AI lending marketplace, we partner with banks and credit unions to expand access to affordable credit through technology that’s both radically intelligent and deeply human. Our platform runs over one million predictions per borrower using more than 3,000 signals, powering smarter, fairer decisions for millions of customers. But the numbers only hint at the impact. Every idea, every voice, and every contribution moves us closer to a world where credit never stands between people and their financial progress.

We’re proudly digital‑first, giving most Upstarters the flexibility to do their best work from wherever they thrive, alongside teammates across 80+ cities in the US and Canada. Digital‑first doesn’t mean distant. We’re intentional about in‑person connection through team onsites, planning sessions, and moments that spark creativity and trust. And whether you choose to work primarily from home or collaborate in‑person from one of our offices in Columbus, Austin, the Bay Area, or New York City (opening Summer 2026), you’ll have the support to work in the way that works best for you.

If you’re energized by tackling meaningful problems, excited to innovate with purpose, and motivated by work that truly matters, we’d love to hear from you.

The Team

Upstart’s Delivery team enables engineers to ship software to production safely, reliably, and with minimal friction. We build and operate the platforms and workflows that support release, deployment, production rollout, and rollback, while giving engineering teams clear visibility into what is changing and how those changes are performing.

Our goal is to make software delivery predictable and self‑service by creating reusable deployment capabilities, automating common operational decisions, and making the state of software in production easy to understand. We partner closely with Developer Platform, Cloud Platform, Site Reliability Engineering, Security, and product engineering teams.

As a Software Engineer II, Delivery

At Upstart, you will build and operate the systems engineers use to release and deploy software to production. You’ll independently deliver well‑scoped engineering projects, contribute to technical design, and improve the reliability and usability of systems that sit directly in the path to production.

How you’ll make an impact
  • Build and improve services, automation, and developer tooling that enable engineering teams to safely release and deploy software to production
  • Develop reliable deployment capabilities, including progressive rollouts, deployment health analysis, and automated rollback, to reduce the risk of production changes
  • Improve visibility into releases, deployments, configuration, and production state so engineers can understand what changed, where it changed, and how it is performing
  • Improve the reliability, performance, observability, and usability of Delivery systems by diagnosing recurring issues and implementing durable improvements
  • Replace manual or fragmented release workflows with reusable, self‑service capabilities that make the common path to production simple and consistent
  • Use AI throughout software development and problem solving, and identify opportunities for AI‑enabled automation that makes software delivery safer, faster, and easier to operate
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field (or its equivalent), plus 3 years of professional software engineering experience
  • Experience developing production software using one or more general‑purpose programming languages
  • Experience designing, building, testing, and operating production software or infrastructure
  • Experience working with cloud infrastructure, distributed systems, deployment systems, developer tooling, or backend services
  • Experience independently delivering well‑scoped software engineering projects from technical design through production operation
  • Demonstrated experience using AI assisted development tools across multiple stages of the software engineering lifecycle, with an interest in continually evolving how you use these tools as their capabilities advance
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Kubernetes, AWS, containers, and infrastructure as code
  • Knowledge of deployment platforms, release automation, internal developer platforms, or developer tooling
  • Experience with progressive delivery practices such as canary deployments, automated health analysis, and rollback
  • Experience with GitOps or deployment technologies such as Argo CD, Helm, or similar systems
  • Experience using AI‑assisted development tools across the software engineering lifecycle or building AI‑enabled developer workflows and automation
