Software Engineer II, Backend (Identity Decisioning)

Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly, giving consumers the flexibility to buy now and pay later without any hidden fees or compounding interest.

Location: Charlotte, NC. Employment type: Full-time. Salary negotiable. Seniority: Advanced (5‑10 yrs).

Identity Engineering owns the systems responsible for onboarding all consumers and managing their authentication and verification journeys across our product surfaces. In this role, you will own and deliver high‑availability, low‑latency systems on critical paths by gaining a deep understanding of business, product, and engineering context.

What You’ll Do

• Break down larger projects into individual tasks, deliver them in phases, and collaborate with the team to ensure timely delivery.
• Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics during ideation, articulating technical constraints and trade‑offs.
• Support ops and availability of artifacts by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating issues when needed, and participating in on‑call duties.
• Engage in team growth and development—participating in interview processes and other community activities.

What We Look For

• 1.5+ years of experience as a software engineer.
• Proficiency in Python or Kotlin and experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems.
• Familiarity with distributed systems and technologies such as AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes.
• Ability to turn business scenarios into well‑tested, extensible code.
• Comfort navigating large codebases, debugging others’ code, and conducting code reviews.
• Ownership of personal growth, proactively seeking feedback from teammates, managers, and stakeholders.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration with a global engineering team.
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent practical experience.

Compensation & Benefits

Base Pay Grade – L

Equity Grade – 6

Employees new to affirm typically come in at the start of the pay range. Base pay is part of a total compensation package that may include equity rewards, monthly stipends for health, wellness, and tech spending, and benefits.

USA base pay range (CA, WA, NY, NJ, CT) per year: $160,000 – $210,000

USA base pay range (all other U.S. states) per year: $142,000 – $192,000
