Job summary

Collins Aerospace seeks a Software Engineer II for the Avionics System Tools (AST) team in Cedar Rapids, IA. You will design, develop, test, and support software tools used in avionics development and verification across Linux and Windows environments.

You will work with C, C++, C#, Python, Java, and Robot Framework, building automated test infrastructure and DevOps capabilities to enable scalable, safe, and compliant software production for aerospace programs.

Qualifications

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 2 years of related experience.
  • Software development experience in one or more languages such as C, C++, C#, Python or Java.
  • Experience developing, testing, debugging, or supporting software applications or engineering tools.
  • Familiarity with software configuration management or revision-control tools.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and support software tools for avionics development, simulation, integration, verification, and production.
  • Develop software using languages such as C, C++, C#, Python, Java, and Robot Framework as needed.
  • Develop and maintain automated test infrastructure to support CI, verification, and engineering workflows.
  • Contribute to software requirements, designs, code, tests, and other artifacts across the software lifecycle.
  • Perform root-cause analysis of issues and implement robust solutions with guidance from senior staff.
  • Participate in peer reviews of requirements, designs, code, and verification artifacts.

We are seeking a Software Engineer II to join our Avionics System Tools (AST) team based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Our team develops and supports software tools, simulation environments, test infrastructure, and DevOps capabilities used across Collins Aerospace avionics programs. These technologies enable engineers to develop airborne software, test avionics systems, integrate flight-deck capabilities, automate software production, and generate/verify avionics configuration data. You will work with software and systems engineers across commercial, business, and military avionics programs while gaining exposure to a broad range of products, technologies, and customers.

What You Will Do
  • Design, develop, test, and support software tools used for avionics development, simulation, integration, verification, and production.
  • Develop software using languages such as C, C++, C#, Python, Java, and Robot Framework based on project needs.
  • Develop and maintain automated test infrastructure supporting continuous integration, software verification, and repeatable engineering workflows. Implement and support DevOps tools and processes that improve automation, efficiency, and consistency across avionics development environments.
  • Develop software requirements, designs, code, test cases, and other engineering artifacts throughout the software lifecycle.
  • Investigate software issues, perform root‑cause analysis, and implement robust solutions with support from experienced technical leads when needed.
  • Participate in peer reviews of requirements, designs, source code, and verification artifacts to ensure software quality and maintainability.
  • Support integration of software tools with desktop, laboratory, virtual, and cloud‑based avionics environments.
  • Collaborate with engineers, technical leads, program teams, and internal customers to understand technical needs and deliver effective solutions.
  • Use software configuration management and engineering tools such as Git, Jira, Artifactory, Jama, Grafana, Docker in a cross‑platform environment including Linux and Windows.
  • Contribute ideas that improve software architecture, development processes, automated testing, and overall engineering efficiency.
  • Support development and verification activities for unqualified and DO-330 qualified software tools, as applicable.

Qualifications You Must Have
  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 2 years of prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field.
  • Software development experience using one or more programming languages such as C, C++, C#, Python, or Java.
  • Experience developing, testing, debugging, or supporting software applications or engineering tools.
  • Working knowledge of software development lifecycle activities, including requirements, design, implementation, testing, and peer review.
  • Experience working with software configuration management or revision‑control tools such as Git or Subversion.
  • Experience with Microsoft Windows and/or Linux software development environments.
Qualifications We Prefer
  • Experience developing or supporting software tools used by engineering teams.
  • Experience writing software requirements, test cases, or automated test procedures.
  • Familiarity with automated software testing, including unit, functional, integration, or system‑level testing.
  • Experience with object‑oriented software development and modular software design.

The salary range for this role is 68,900 USD - 131,100 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
