Position Description & Qualifications

Serco has an exciting opportunity to join us in supporting one of our valued customers as a Software Engineer, to work out of Offutt AFB, NE.

The Software Engineer will support mission-critical software modernization, development, and deployment efforts for the Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center

This Role involves advancing mission planning and execution capabilities for strategic deterrence through systems engineering, Agile/DevOps practices, and continuous integration/delivery methodologies. Contractors will be engaged in evaluating and enhancing the survivability, interoperability, and reliability of strategic weapon systems while contributing to planning documents, test and evaluation strategies, and rapid technology fielding efforts. This is a unique opportunity to work on mission-critical NC3 software and systems that shape national defense strategies and collaborate with diverse DoD and government partners to drive innovation and operational excellence in support of the strategic enterprise.

In this role, you will:

  • Determine operational feasibility by evaluating analysis, problem definition, requirements, solution development, and proposed solutions.

  • Document and demonstrate solutions by developing documentation, flowcharts, layouts, diagrams, charts, code comments and clear code.

  • Improve operations by conducting systems analysis; recommend changes in policies and procedures.

  • Obtain and license software by obtaining required information from vendors; recommending purchases; testing and approving products.

  • Provide information by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing development and service issues

  • Perform Software Quality Assurance (SQA) to ensure that developed software meets and complies with defined or standardized quality specifications.

  • Work as a member of an agile software development team. Performing some mix of the below tasks at the request of the government team lead or engineering lead.

  • Elaborate high level feature/function descriptions into detailed technical designs and tasks, in collaboration with users and government lead engineers.

  • Perform coding tasks for features/functions which can include automation script writing for auto deployable software and configuration

  • Perform coding tasks for functional and performance tests for features/functions.

  • Perform peer design and code reviews with other team members.

  • Perform coding/scripting tasks for software build, packaging and deployment

  • Perform other software engineering and documentation tasks as assigned.

  • The contractor shall understand, articulate and implement best practices related to this area of expertise.

  • Defining business requirements and recommending a technical approach to meet the needs of a specific system or software application.

  • Generate design specifications for software development to include translating business requirements into detailed algorithms for coding.

  • Review technical documentation such as user guides, training manuals, and system specifications, prior to distribution to end-users and ensure his/her subject area is accurately represented.

  • Fully define current and future integrated requirements for hardware, software, database, and infrastructure systems to optimize software design and implementation.

  • Coordinate the integration of developmental software into operational platforms.

  • Assess applicability of new technologies to mission requirements.

  • Identify and utilize digital tools and technologies to design, develop, test, and manage complex systems, promoting collaboration, and improving efficiency.

  • Perform a variety of systematic, disciplined, and quantifiable approaches to the development, operation, and maintenance of software, encompassing techniques and procedures often regulated by a software development process with the purpose of improving the reliability and maintainability of software systems.

  • Establish software information and engineering requirements which is necessitated by the potential complexity of AFNWC/NCC and USSTRATCOM software systems, which may contain millions of lines of codes.

  • Develop software protypes to support system modernization initiatives.

  • Apply the discipline of software engineering for specific technical problems and procedures, including knowledge, tools, and methods for software requirements, software design, software construction, software testing, and software maintenance tasks.

  • Relate the disciplines of software engineering to the disciplines of computer science, computer engineering, management, mathematics, project management, quality management, software ergonomics, and systems engineering.

  • Research and analyze emerging commercial and other DoD technologies for potential applicability to USSTRATCOM systems addressing system and software application requirements.

  • Perform analysis of alternatives on Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) and Government Off-The-Shelf (GOTS) software tools identifying software solutions that may be utilized "as is" or further developed or incorporated into software prototypes. COTS and GOTS software and software prototypes shall support the research, testing, and assessment of proposed operating concepts and system architectures including the development and testing of new communications, messaging, and data transmission concepts

To be successful in this role, you must have:

  • BA/BS in the respective technical/professional discipline being performed

  • Minimum of 2 years supporting the DOD

  • Experience in Agile DevOps

  • Must possess and maintain a TS w/SCI eligibility
