Job description

About the Role

Travelers is seeking a Software Engineer I to join our organization as we grow and transform our Technology landscape through AI-driven engineering practices. The individual will complete intermediate end-to-end engineering tasks for specific system assignments including developing, analyzing, configuring, testing, debugging, troubleshooting, documenting, health monitoring/alerting, and implementing based on user or system design specifications, as well as participating in troubleshooting, conducting impact analysis and escalating appropriately. In this role, the individual contributor is expected to make AI-driven tools and workflows a core part of how they engineer — not as an occasional aid, but as a fundamental shift in how software is designed, built, and delivered. This role operates within an AI-driven team where the standard expectation is that AI capabilities are actively and continuously applied to improve engineering outcomes at every stage of the software development lifecycle.

Responsibilities
  • Perform analysis, design, development, and configuration functions as well as define technical requirements for assignments of intermediate complexity — with AI-driven tools as a primary means of accelerating delivery, improving code quality, and reducing manual effort across the engineering lifecycle.
  • Participate with team to perform analysis, assessment and resolution for defects and incidents of intermediate complexity and elevate appropriately, routinely applying AI-driven tooling to accelerate root‑cause identification, pattern recognition, and resolution quality.
  • Work within guidelines set by team to independently tackle well‑scoped problems, defaulting to AI-driven approaches as a first line of problem solving and contributing observations about what works back to the team.
  • Seek opportunities to expand technical knowledge and capabilities, with a strong emphasis on deepening fluency in AI tools, prompt engineering, and the evolving landscape of AI-driven software development practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Ideal Candidate
  • Three years of programming/development experience.
  • Hands‑on experience using AI-driven or AI-assisted tools in a professional engineering context strongly preferred.
  • Strong delivery skills, including the ability to deliver work at a steady, predictable pace, decompose work into small releases, and contribute to trade‑off and negotiation discussions. Consistently applies AI-driven tools to compress delivery timelines, reduce rework, and improve predictability and quality of output.
  • Demonstrated domain expertise, including the ability to understand technical concepts necessary to do the job effectively, willingness, cooperation, and concern for business issues and in‑depth knowledge of immediate systems. Actively applies AI-driven techniques to deepen system understanding, surface hidden dependencies, and accelerate onboarding.
  • Proven problem-solving skills, including debugging, recognizing and solving repetitive problems, using AI-driven tooling as a core problem-solving instrument to generate hypotheses, automate diagnosis, and prototype solutions while applying critical judgment.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly and concisely interact with team members, document work, collaborate well, ask the right questions, and receive constructive criticism. Communicates AI tool usage transparently and documents AI-assisted decisions.
  • Intermediate leadership skills with a proven track record of self-motivation, identifying growth opportunities, and building AI-driven engineering fluency to contribute to team velocity.
Must Have
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, related STEM field, or its equivalent in education and/or work experience.
  • 2 additional years of software engineering experience.
Compensation

Salary Range: $99,100.00 - $163,400.00

Benefits
  • Health Insurance: Coverage for employees and eligible family members from day one.
  • Retirement: 401(k) match up to 5% of eligible pay; pension plan; paying‑it‑forward program.
  • Paid Time Off: Minimum of 20 days PTO annually plus nine paid company holidays.
  • Wellness Program: Tools, discounts, and resources for wellness and mental health counseling.
  • Volunteer Encouragement: Matching Gift and Volunteer Rewards program.
