OpenGov is seeking a Software Engineer I in Boston to help build best‑in‑class SaaS solutions for local and state governments. You’ll work across frontend and backend, using ReactJS, Typescript, GraphQL, and NodeJS in an AI‑first engineering culture.

The role emphasizes fast delivery, high code quality, and collaboration with product, UX, and platform engineers to solve unique government tech challenges.

Qualifications

  • Experience shipping features end-to-end in frontend + backend.
  • Ability to work with customers to improve product experiences.
  • Strong data structures and algorithms knowledge.
  • Comfort with AI‑driven UX concepts and workflow automation.
  • BA/BS in CS or equivalent plus proficiency in core languages.
  • Experience with ReactJS, TypeScript, GraphQL, NodeJS, and SQL is preferred.

Job Summary

As a Software Engineer I at OpenGov, you’ll build best-in-class SaaS solutions that enable efficiency, transparency, and accountability within government agencies. As a crucial member of our engineering team, you’ll lead and deliver new features and improvements in a fast-paced, agile environment, utilizing modern technologies such as ReactJS, Typescript, GraphQL, and NodeJS in an AI first engineering culture.

A typical day in this role would provide opportunities to optimize applications for speed and scalability and resolve various unique technical challenges. Strong collaboration skills with the product, UX, and platform engineers and the ability to execute quickly will enable your success.

You are naturally passionate about good component design and solid application architecture. Responsibilities
  • Collaborate across the organization to understand and translate business priorities into shipped features delivering customer success.

  • Generate clean, efficient, and well‑documented software following industry best practices.

  • Write robust, highly performant, well‑crafted code.

  • Design and develop well‑structured and easy‑to‑consume APIs

  • Implement unit and integration tests to improve and maintain high code coverage

  • Deliver quality, scalable, and maintainable software to customers at an impressive pace

  • Contribute to OpenGov's Engineering culture of innovation, leading‑edge technology adoption and quality

Requirements and Preferred Experience
  • Thrives in a fast‑paced, high‑growth, ambiguous environment where new ideas ship daily, staying closely aligned to customer needs and outcomes, and consistently turning rapid iteration into measurable customer impact.

  • Demonstrated experience in working with customers to improve product experiences

  • Experience working across the stack (frontend + backend) and comfort shipping features end‑to‑end

  • Experience building with AI‑driven UX, agents, and workflow automation (direct ML experience not required)

  • BA/BS in a computer‑science‑related discipline or equivalent experience required

  • Proficiency in Java, C++, and C# or equivalent program languages is required.

  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of data structures and algorithms

  • Working knowledge of Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, ReactJS, and NodeJS preferred

  • Working knowledge of SQL preferred

  • Working knowledge of GraphQL APIs preferred

  • Working knowledge of event‑driven architecture and Kafka preferred

  • Working knowledge of ElasticSearch/OpenSearch preferred

Compensation:

Boston, MA: $130,000 - $144,000

On target ranges above include base plus a portion of variable compensation that is earned based on company and individual performance.

The final compensation will be determined by a number of factors such as qualifications, expertise, and the candidate’s geographical location.
