Responsibilities

• Work the whole vertical: fluidly move between on-device embedded firmware and higher-level cloud services, owning interfaces between layers.
• Bridge hardware and cloud: build pipelines carrying telemetry through intermittently connected networks into databases and cloud environments.
• Build the higher layers: maintain backend services, databases, cloud infrastructure, and visualization tools to turn device data into insights.
• Keep the fielded fleet healthy as it scales: implement fault detection, isolation, recovery, and alarming for troubleshooting.
• Support software- and hardware-in-the-loop capabilities: help build test benches and V&V frameworks.
• Raise the bar on documentation and software quality: write clear technical docs and enforce version control, regression testing, OTA updates, and CI/CD.

About the Role

AirJoule is seeking a talented software generalist capable of contributing to our entire stack, from the embedded controls running on rugged hardware, through the networking and data plumbing in between, up to external databases, cloud infrastructure, and automation tooling used to make sense of it all.

This is a high-ownership, high-autonomy role for an engineer who’d prefer contributing to the whole product instead of living in one lane. You’ll help define how AirJoule’s software function scales, and your contributions will directly impact systems providing relief to water-scarce regions around the world.

Key Responsibilities

• Work the whole vertical: Move fluidly between on-device embedded firmware and higher-level cloud services, owning the interfaces between layers where subtle failures tend to hide.
• Bridge hardware and cloud: Build the pipelines that carry telemetry from fielded systems, through intermittently connected networks, into databases and cloud environments for storage, monitoring, and analysis.
• Build the higher layers: Stand up and maintain the backend services, databases, cloud infrastructure, and visualization mediums that turn raw device data into operational insights.
• Keep the fielded fleet healthy as it scales: Harden the supervisory layer of the stack through fault detection, isolation, recovery, and alarming for fast, decisive troubleshooting.
• Support software- and hardware-in-the-loop capabilities: Help build out subsystem test benches and software frameworks dedicated to V&V campaigns.
• Raise the bar on documentation and software quality: Write clear, concise technical documentation for both developers and users. Establish and enforce standards for version control, regression testing, OTA updates, and CI/CD.

Qualifications

Required

• Strong fundamentals in programming (Python; C++ a plus), networking, and software architecture.
• A track record of shipping and debugging at more than one layr.
• Demonstrated experience moving data from soft real-time embedded devices up to cloud or backend systems.
• 3+ years building production software across multiple layers of the stack.
• BS in Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent experience.

Preferred

• Deep experience with networking, cloud infrastructure, databases, or backend services at scale.
• Background in control theory, numerical methods, machine learning, or related technical discipline.
• Experience implementing modern security standards at multiple layers of the stack.
• Deployment experience in cellular bandwidth-constrained or air-gapped environments.
• UI/UX design experience (React, TypeScript), particularly for stakeholders with different technical backgrounds and visualization preferences.
• Professional experience in automotive, aerospace, defense, robotics, or energy sectors.
