Job summary

Garmin seeks a full-time Software Engineer 1 (C++ MEC MapTech) at its U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area. You will help build tools, libraries, and algorithms powering Garmin’s maps and geospatial data processing.

You will partner with Cartography and Map Technology teams to turn real-world data into trusted map experiences used across Garmin products. The role focuses on C++ software development, performance-oriented coding, and adherence to Garmin’s coding standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Math, Physics or related field
• Excellent academics (GPA ≥ 3.0)
• Demonstrated knowledge to develop basic software in C++

Responsibilities

• Performs new product and/or application software design and development as well as maintenance activities for products and/or applications in production
• Builds upon existing software solutions to develop basic software in C++ for Garmin products following Garmin’s coding standards
• Troubleshoots basic issue reports, reproduces issues, evaluates technical cause and implements and tests software solutions
• Identifies and resolves defects of basic scope using debuggers, emulators, simulators, and logic analyzers
• Applies design standards and procedures using appropriate engineering tools to document and implement basic designs
• Reviews product and/or application information including manuals and brochures for technical accuracy
• Participates in product and/or application definition activities including feature analysis and system tradeoffs

Overview

We are seeking a full-time Software Engineer 1 (C++ MEC MapTech) at Garmin's U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area. In this role, you will be help build tools, libraries, and algorithims that power Garmin’s industry-leading maps. This role is ideal for someone with a passion for working with geospatial data, complex data processing systems, or performance-critical algorithms and data structures. You will partner closely with Garmin’s Cartography and Map Technology teams to turn real-world data into trusted map experiences used across Garmin products.

Essential Functions

• Performs new product and/or application software design and development as well as maintenance activities for products and/or applications already in production
• Builds upon existing software solutions to develop basic software in C++ for Garmin products and/or applications consistently following Garmin’s coding standards and in accordance with applicable software development methodology
• Troubleshoots basic issue reports, reproduces issues, evaluates technical cause and implements and tests software solutions
• Identifies and resolves defects of basic scope using proper engineering tools and techniques such as debuggers, emulators, simulators, and logic analyzers
• Applies design standards and procedures using appropriate engineering tools to document and implement basic designs in an organized manner
• Reviews product and/or application information including manuals and brochures for technical accuracy
• Participates in product and/or application definition activities including feature analysis and system tradeoffs

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Math, Physics or related field OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
• Demonstrated knowledge, education, experience and/or training necessary to develop basic software in C++

Desired Qualifications

• Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5)
• Previous work or internship experience in design, particularly for consumer products
• Interest in data structures, algorithms, pathfinding, embedded file formats or GIS desktop applications
• Previous work or internship experience in cartographic, GIS, or geospatial fields
