About the Center for High Performance Computing(CHPC)

The Center for High Performance Computing (CHPC) at the Universityof Utah provides advanced computing and data systems and servicesthat support cutting-edge scholarship and innovation across alldisciplines. The CHPC partners with faculty, researchers, andinstitutional stakeholders to design and operate, scalable andperformant computing environments that enable data-intensive andcomputationally complex research. In addition to supportingtraditional high-performance computing workloads, the CHPC plays acritical role in developing and maintaining computationalenvironments for artificial intelligence (AI) and research withsensitive information that must meet federal and sponsor compliancerequirements. Through collaboration, technical expertise, and acommitment to service, the CHPC advances the University of Utah'sresearch mission by delivering reliable, trustworthy, andforward-looking research computing infrastructure.

About this job opportunity

The Software Infrastructure team at CHPC seeks a software engineerwith an emphasis on full-stack web development in Django/Python,Go, SQL, Javascript, HTML and CSS. Focus will be on developing andintegrating enterprise web applications for CHPC staff and end-userresearchers, with opportunities to work and train in a variety ofother software and technical domains (see below). This is a hybridin-office role, and some weekly in-office presence at CHPC isrequired.

The Software Infrastructure team is responsible for a variety ofsoftware and data systems, from design and development tooperations. You will work closely with other software engineers,sysadmins and research-computing professionals. Relevant softwaredomains include but are not limited to: enterprise web applicationsand databases, command-line interfaces, version-control andsoftware collaboration systems (git), observability and analytics,modern Linux systems, cloud-native software, high-performancecomputing, and scientific and research computing (including ML/AI).This is a primarily internal software-facing team that typicallydoes not interact directly with server hardware, nor directly withend-user researchers, though opportunities may arise. In thisfrontend-focused role, however, direct interactions withresearchers are expected during the development of end-userinterfaces.

This position requires technical proficiency that overlapssignificantly with the above technologies and domains, specificallyPython and/or Go. Strong communication skills are required. Therole is expected to conduct work assignments of increasingcomplexity, in a timely manner, under moderate supervision withlatitude for independent judgment.

Minimum Qualifications

EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher educationcan be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience(Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related workexperience).

Department may hire employee at one of the following job levels:

Software Development Engineer, I: Requires abachelor's (or equivalency) + 2 years of directly related workexperience or a master's (or equivalency) degree.

Software Development Engineer, II: Requires abachelor's (or equivalency) + 4 years or a master's (orequivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience.

Software Development Engineer, III: Requires abachelor's (or equivalency) + 6 years or a master's (orequivalency) + 4 years of directly related work experience.

All levels:
  • Proficient in Python programming language
  • Proficient in Web Development (frontend/backend)
Preferences
  • Experience designing and implementing user-friendly GUIs.
  • Experience developing interactive data visualizations.
  • Experience with Golang and/or cloud-native softwareecosystem.
  • Familiarity with data engineering or analysis: common dataquery languages (SQL), common data storage and transfer protocols(CSV, Parquet, protobufs). Familiarity with HPC, scientificcomputing, or machine learning (training).
