Job summary

Jobtailor in Fort Meade, MD is seeking a senior Java software engineer to design, develop, and implement complex software capabilities for computer-based systems, with a focus on AI agent integration.

You will work with engineers to deliver multi-file features, refactor code, and create automated tests using autonomous agents, while auditing agent-generated code for security and performance. Onsite work is required.

Qualifications

Work closely with other engineers to create client-focused software solutions
Use modern tools and technologies and stay current with developments in software engineering
Integrate and use advanced AI coding agents in daily engineering workflows
Deliver multi-file features, codebase refactoring, and automated unit/integration tests using autonomous agents
Guide AI agents through complex, multi-repository architectures
Audit agent-generated code for security, performance, and architectural alignment
Work in a fast-paced small-business environment
Perform additional duties as assigned

Requirements

Must have strong working knowledge and experience developing Java-based software capabilities
Inquisitive nature, responsiveness, and excellent testing skills
Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to work under pressure with multiple deadlines
Proven track record integrating advanced AI agents, specifically Claude Code or Google's Antigravity / Gemini agentic workflows, into daily software engineering routines
Experience using autonomous agents for multi-file feature implementations, complex codebase refactoring, and automated unit/integration test generation
Ability to guide AI agents through complex, multi-repository architectures and critically audit agent-generated code for security, performance, and architectural alignment
Must currently have and maintain an active TS/SCI-level U.S. Government Security Clearance
U.S. Citizenship required
At least 5 years of Software Engineering experience with modern Java frameworks and libraries and a bachelor's degree in a related field; or 3 years of relevant experience with a master's degree in a related field; or a high school diploma or equivalent and 9 years of relevant experience
Experience designing enterprise APIs
Experience with RESTful web services
Experience with microservices architecture
Experience with object-oriented programming paradigms
Experience with the agile software lifecycle
Experience with configuration management tools such as Git, Nexus, and Maven
Comfortable working on a Linux command line
Ability to learn quickly and work independently and in a team setting
Problem-solving skills and ability to review information and compile data appropriately
Ability to work onsite at customer facilities in Fort Meade, Maryland, at least 1 day per week and at company headquarters in Columbia, Maryland, at least 1 day per week
Flexibility for increased onsite frequency based on customer mission requirements and operational needs
Preferred: experience with AWS or Azure
Preferred: experience with distributed databases, NoSQL databases, and full-text search engines such as Elasticsearch, MongoDB, and Solr
Preferred: scripting experience
Preferred: prior experience or familiarity with Data Lakes/Warehouses, specifically BDP or JCRS-D
Understanding of Agile methodologies and standard software development tool suites such as JIRA, Confluence, and GitHub Enterprise
