Job summary

Caterpillar Inc. in Chicago, IL seeks a software professional to help design and deliver AI-powered solutions across digital platforms, customer experiences, dealer ecosystems, and enterprise operations.

You will work with Java, JavaScript, Python, SpringBoot, React, SQL, APIs, cloud platforms and Generative AI, building microservices, data pipelines, and reusable components, with emphasis on production-grade delivery.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering or related field.
  • 0–2 years of relevant experience (internships or projects welcomed).
  • Minimum GPA 3.0/4.0 (no rounding).
  • Experience via internships, personal projects or coursework valued.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to design, development, implementation, testing, and support of AI-powered solutions for Caterpillar's digital platforms and operations.
  • Identify and de-risk emerging technologies with proofs and documented patterns.
  • Design and implement enterprise microservices; enable API technologies.
  • Develop data pipelines in Python and investigate defects using SageMaker notebooks.
  • Collaborate on mobile/web development and UI/UX design activities.

What You Will Do
  • Contribute to the design, development, implementation, testing, and support of AI-powered solutions that enable Caterpillar's digital platforms, customer experiences, dealer ecosystems, and enterprise business operations
  • Identify, evaluate, and de-risk emerging technologies by creating Proofs of Technology, Proofs of Concept, and documenting the implementation patterns
  • Designed and implemented enterprise microservices
  • Enable API technologies and deploy Microsoft Fabric patterns while leveraging .Net skills to create AI agents
  • Mobile and web development
  • User interface and user experience design activities; including wire framing, prototyping, working with a complex design system, applying design thinking methodologies, creating conceptual designs and creating production-level designs
  • Develop data pipelines code in python as well as hands on investigating and resolving software defects through code or through data modification python scripts using SageMaker notebooks
  • Use generative AI tools to assist in efficient software development, information gathering, and defect triaging, as well as hands on development of additional generative AI tools

  • Software Integration Engineering: knowledge of software integration processes and functions; ability to design, develop and maintain interfaces and linkage to alternative platforms and software packages
  • Software Product Design/Architecture: knowledge of software product design; ability to convert market requirements into software product design
  • Software Product Technical Knowledge: knowledge of technical aspects of a software product; ability to design, configure and integrate technical aspects of software products
  • Software Product Testing: knowledge of software product testing; ability to design, plan, and execute testing strategies and tactics to ensure software product quality and adherence to stated requirements
Top Candidates May Have
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering or related degree (selected candidates must complete their degree by their start date)
  • 0-2 years of relevant experience related to this field (internships or academic projects are a plus)
  • Minimum cumulative GPA requirement 3.0/ 4.0 (no rounding)
  • Experience through internships, personal projects, research, hackathons, student organizations, or coursework is highly valued
Additional Information
  • Locations for this position are typically Chicago and Peoria Illinois. Limited opportunities in Dallas, Texas
  • Basic relocation may be available, depending on relocation qualifications

Summary Pay Range

$89,210.00 - $144,960.00
