Job summary

BCBST BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, Inc. is seeking a Software Engineer to join the Billing Applications team.

You will support premium billing, receipts processing, ACH drafting, and related financial operations, working across legacy and modern technologies. You will contribute to new development, enhancements, production support, lifecycle upgrades, and ongoing modernization efforts, with a collaborative cross-functional team.

Qualifications

• Bachelors degree or equivalent in CS or related field.
• 1 year of IT concepts and development methodology experience.
• 3 years of systems and programming experience.
• Experience with at least one programming language commonly used at BCBST.

Responsibilities

• Define system scope and objectives; design and modify information systems.
• Develop, test, and document programs, subroutines and scripts.
• Provide guidance on projects and potentially lead small to medium efforts.
• Maintain and upgrade technical skills across languages, databases and platforms.
• Respond to failures and performance events to minimize downtime.
• Mentor less-experienced analysts and programmers.

Job description

We are hiring a Software Engineer to join our Billing Applications team at BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee!

In this role, you will support and enhance the applications responsible for premium billing, receipts processing, ACH drafting, claims recovery, delinquency management, COBRA administration, and self-funded billing operations that directly impact BCBST's billing accuracy. As part of a collaborative team of engineers, you will contribute to new development, enhancements to existing applications, production support, lifecycle upgrades, and ongoing modernization efforts. This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who enjoys working across both legacy and modern technologies while helping transform critical business systems that support core financial operations.

Ideal candidates for the role will bring:

• Strong experience developing applications using C# and SQL
• Experience supporting enterprise business applications throughout the software development lifecycle
• The ability to troubleshoot, enhance, and maintain business-critical applications in a production environment
• Experience working on both new development projects and enhancements to existing systems
• Strong collaboration and communication skills within a cross-functionalteam environment

Preferred qualifications:

• Healthcare or health insurance industry experience
• Experience supporting billing, payment processing, or payer-related systems
• Experience with SQL Server and Google BigQuery
• Experience developing web applications using MVC frameworks
• Experience working in the Agile framework
• Exposure to AIX or COBOL environments

Note:

• This is a remote, work-from-home position, but the final round of interviews will take place on-site in our Chattanooga, TN office
• Participation in an on-call rotation is required

Job Responsibilities

• Formulates and defines system scope and objectives through research and fact-finding to design, develop, modify, or integrate complex information systems.
• Devises or modifies application systems and procedures to optimize functional requirements including capacity, operating time, response time, and form of desired results.
• Designs, codes, tests, debugs, and documents programs, subroutines, and scripts.
• May serve one or more project team roles, such as project lead, business systems analyst, or technical lead, for small to medium efforts or manage phases of medium to large efforts.
• Maintains technical skill set for software languages, databases, platforms, operating systems, utilities and networks needed to support work assignments.
• Responds to system failures and performance events by taking appropriate measures to reduce system downtime and eliminate recurrence of problems.
• Regularly provides guidance and training to less-experienced analysts/programmers.

Job Qualifications

Education

• Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or equivalent work experience required. Equivalent years of experience are determined as one year of technical experience for every year of college requested.

Experience

• 1 year - Experience with information technology concepts, application development methodology, terminology, and standards required
• 3 years - Systems and programming experience required
• 1 year - Expert working knowledge of at least one programming language in use at BCBST.

Skills\Certifications

• Proven skill with information technology in use at BCBST is required
• Proven analysis, design, and coding skills, and demonstrated success in leading large and complex projects
• Demonstrated ability to interpret and translate technical and/or or complex concepts into information meaningful to project team members and/or business personnel.
• Be organized, reliable, and able to manage multiple tasks with exceptional work ethic.
• Leadership skills
• Must be able to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical co-workers

• 2+ years working experience with .Net and/or C# required.
• Experience with SQL preferred.
• BCBST experience preferred.
• Financial experience is a plus.
• Web development experience is a plus.
