Job description

Description

U.S. Soccer Overview

The U.S. Soccer Federation exists in service to soccer. Our aim is to ignite a national passion for the game. Because we believe that soccer is more than a sport; it is a force for good.

We understand the importance and the power of teamwork, on and off the pitch. That is why we work closely with our Federation partners and members, to inspire, support and guide every level of the game: from the grassroots to the National Teams. We want to bring soccer into every home and every community, right across America. Because we believe that soccer can transform lives like no other sport. Soccer can represent the best of U.S.

U.S. Soccer is in a period of significant growth, with ambitious plans for U.S. Soccer in the near and far future. We are, therefore, looking for dynamic servant leaders to join us on this journey: in service to soccer. Applicants must be able to demonstrate visionary leadership, analytical decision-making, professional flexibility, and an empathic management style that builds bold teams and delivers globally significant results.

Position Description

The Software Engineer will help build and evolve the shared platform capabilities that power U.S.Soccer’s Soccer Services and Learning Center experiences. Rather than building isolated applications orone-off features, this engineer will create reusable components, services, content models, and workflowpatterns that can be composed across public, authenticated, learner, and administrator experiencesserving coaches, referees, educators, Organization Members, players, parents, and other participants

across the country.

The work spans education, course management, licensing and certification, member and organizationservices, registration and application workflows, safeguarding and compliance, content delivery, andadministrative operations. This engineer will extend proven patterns across clear boundaries betweenexperience, content, identity, and operational systems; make U.S. Soccer’s design, accessibility, security, reliability, and performance standards the default; and modernize existing workflows incrementally

while maintaining reliable service for current users.

The ideal candidate is a systems-oriented full-stack engineer who is comfortable moving between user facing interfaces, server-side workflows, APIs, data, integrations, and production troubleshooting. Theycare about making complex processes understandable, view accessibility and reliability as productrequirements, and work closely with product, design, content and curriculum, operations, and subject-matter experts to build new capabilities, integrate existing systems, and operate the resulting software

in production.

Depending on the product area, this engineer may work with technologies such as Go, PHP/Laravel,JavaScript and TypeScript, Sanity, PostgreSQL, Auth0/OIDC, AWS, containers and Kubernetes, andCDN/edge delivery. We do not expect candidates to arrive as experts in every part of the stack; strongweb fundamentals, engineering judgment, and the ability to learn are more important.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Own production features end to end across Soccer Services and the Learning Center—from discovery and implementation through testing, release, monitoring, and iteration.

  • Create reusable platform building blocks—including user-interface components, service patterns, content models, templates, and workflow patterns that solve shared problems and can be adopted across products.

  • Deliver learner- and administrator-facing experiences such as dashboards, course modules, video review, assessment and certification flows, renewals, progress tracking, in-person clinic logistics, and administrative tools; translate complex requirements involving profiles, organizations, registrations, credentials, eligibility, documents, and approvals into clear, maintainable software.

  • Develop responsive and accessible user interfaces and reusable components aligned with U.S. Soccer’s design system, building for variable connectivity, older devices, media-rich content, and a broad range of screen sizes and browsers.

  • Build and maintain backend services, APIs, data models, and integrations across identity, content, learning, member, analytics, and third-party systems, using clear contracts that support incremental modernization and compatibility with existing workflows.

  • Partner with product, design, content and curriculum, data, and operational experts across Coaching Education, Refereeing, Safeguarding, Soccer Services, and U.S. Soccer’s member ecosystem; help define requirements, acceptance criteria, and measurable outcomes.

  • Protect security, privacy, role-based access, auditability, and data integrity, including during migrations and integrations.

  • Improve automated testing, performance, scalability, resilience, and observability; monitor production health, diagnose incidents, and deliver durable fixes.

  • Participate in code and architecture reviews, technical planning, estimation, documentation, and disciplined release practices while communicating tradeoffs, dependencies, and delivery risk clearly.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Software Engineering or related field.

  • 3+ years of professional experience building and operating production web applications.

  • Demonstrated ability to deliver features across both frontend and backend systems, including strong HTML, CSS, and modern JavaScript or TypeScript skills and experience with at least one server-side language.

  • Experience designing, consuming, and troubleshooting web APIs and working with relational databases.

  • Strong understanding of maintainable software design, automated testing, version control, code review, and continuous integration and delivery practices.

  • Experience building secure, privacy-aware, responsive, and accessible digital experiences.

  • Ability to diagnose issues across application code, integrations, infrastructure, logs, metrics, and user-reported behavior and to carry fixes safely into production.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical decisions to nontechnical partners.

  • Experience with project-management and collaboration software such as Jira and Microsoft 365.

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-moving, cross-functional environment, manage competing priorities, and connect implementation details to broader product and organizational goals.

  • General knowledge of soccer and its ecosystem, or a demonstrated interest in learning it quickly.

  • Must be able to connect “micro” details to the “macro” vision and mission.

  • Proficient experience with Microsoft Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook).

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with technologies relevant to the current environment, such as Go, PHP/Laravel,

  • JavaScript/TypeScript, Sanity or another headless CMS, PostgreSQL, Auth0/OIDC, or similar tools.

  • Experience deploying and operating cloud applications using AWS, containers, Kubernetes,

  • CDN/edge services, and modern observability practices.

  • Experience designing systems with CQRS and event sourcing, and building APIs that use JSON

  • Patch or comparable standards for partial resource updates.

  • Experience building learning-management, education, certification, membership, eligibility, compliance, document-review, or other multi-role workflow products.

  • Experience with design systems, WCAG 2.1 AA, media-rich experiences, and products designed for low-bandwidth or older-device contexts.

  • Experience integrating identity, content, CRM, analytics, event-driven, or third-party platforms while maintaining data quality and auditability.

  • Background in or passion for soccer, sports, education, or membership-based organizations;

  • Spanish-language proficiency is a plus
