Job summary

Location: Remote / Alexandria, VA

Position Overview

Whitespace is seeking a highly motivated Software Engineer, with geospatial analysis experience, to join our engineering and analytics team. This role combines software engineering, geospatial data science, and advanced analytics to support mission-critical programs including Tactical Surveillance, Reconnaissance, and Tracking (TacSRT).

The ideal candidate is a full-stack problem solver who can design scalable software systems, build data pipelines, perform geospatial analysis, and develop analytic capabilities that transform large volumes of commercial and geospatial data into actionable intelligence.

You will work closely with software engineers, data scientists, analysts, and customer stakeholders to develop innovative solutions that support national security, operational planning, and strategic decision-making. This position will report to the VP of Engineering.

This position is 100% remote! It also requires 15% travel to the corporate and customer locations. In addition, there may be occasional weekend work required. The candidate MUST be a US citizen and reside in the contiguous United States. The candidate must be a W2 employee of GeoDelphi, Inc. No 3rd party applications.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Software Engineering
  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain scalable software solutions supporting the Whitespace Answers Platform and Iris AI ecosystem.
  • Build backend services, APIs, data pipelines, and analytic applications using modern software engineering practices.
  • Write clean, efficient, maintainable, and testable code primarily using Python and Java.
  • Collaborate across Agile teams to develop technical solutions for complex geospatial and data-centric challenges.
  • Participate in software releases, code reviews, CI/CD pipelines, and DevOps processes.
  • Improve existing applications through performance optimization, automation, and architecture enhancements.
  • Provide technical consultation and troubleshooting support for software and infrastructure issues.
Geospatial Data Science & Analytics
  • Collect, integrate, clean, and analyze large-scale geospatial and non-geospatial datasets.
  • Develop and implement statistical models, machine learning workflows, and geospatial analytics solutions.
  • Design and maintain scalable data processing pipelines for structured and unstructured data.
  • Identify trends, anomalies, patterns, and insights within commercial and geospatial datasets.
  • Develop interactive visualizations and mission-focused analytic products for customer stakeholders.
  • Conduct cloud-based data research and large-scale data processing.
  • Collaborate with engineering, R&D, and mission teams to develop new analytic capabilities and data products.
  • Support intelligence, targeting, collection management, geospatial analysis, and activity-based intelligence initiatives.
Experience
  • Must have a minimum of 7 years of experience in a software engineering role.
  • Experience in designing, building, scaling, and maintaining production software.
  • Strong coding abilities emphasizing quality and testability in your work.
  • Utilize programming languages such as Java, Python, and Go.
  • Strong understanding of DevOps and software/application development processes.
  • Demonstrated experience with continuous integration and software CM processes/tools (GitLab, JIRA, Confluence, Kubernetes, or other DevOps/Continuous Integration tools).
  • Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases and query optimization.
  • Experience acquiring client requirements and resolving workflow problems through automation optimization.
Desired Skills
  • Experience with AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
  • Experience building geospatial web applications and APIs.
  • Experience with machine learning and predictive analytics.
  • Experience using geospatial Python libraries such as GeoPandas.
  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise, or QGIS.
  • Experience with satellite imagery, remote sensing, GEOINT, or commercial geospatial data.
  • Experience with population simulation, activity-based intelligence, or modeling and simulation.
  • Experience with Spark, Hadoop, Athena, EMR, BigQuery, or other large-scale data processing platforms.
  • Experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, Kepler.gl, Deck.gl, or custom Python visualizations.
  • Knowledge of intelligence analysis, collection management, targeting, or military operations.
  • GEOINT Professional Certification (GPC) or related certifications.
