Job description

Description Managing trillions of objects in storage, retrieving them with ms latency, building software that deploys to tens of thousands of hosts, achieving 99.999999999% (you didn’t read that wrong, that’s 11 nines!) durability. These are just a few of the numbers that give you a sense of the scale of the exciting problems you will find every day working in Simple Storage Service (S3). Amazon S3 powers businesses across the globe that make the lives of consumers better daily. Whether its electronic content delivered to your home, technology that betters your remote working experience, allows you to plan travel to exotic places or simply get stuff delivered to your home. As a Software Development Manager in S3, you get to deliver these capabilities and delight our customers through teams of talented engineers and leaders.

We are currently looking for a Software Development Manager to lead the development of S3’s Core API’s. We build innovative software solutions to provide S3 customers secure, durable, high-available and performant storage with a low cost. In this role, you will drive the design and implementation of the API’s that customers use to interact with their storage. You will define, plan and execute on deliverables that drive game changing performance and throughput improvements to S3’s storage platform. You will partner with technical leaders and with other teams in S3 Storage to deliver these capabilities at S3 scale.

Utility Computing (UC)

AWS Utility Computing (UC) provides product innovations — from foundational services such as Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (S3) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), to consistently released new product innovations that continue to set AWS’s services and features apart in the industry. As a member of the UC organization, you’ll support the development and management of Compute, Database, Storage, Internet of Things (Iot), Platform, and Productivity Apps services in AWS, including support for customers who require specialized security solutions for customers who require specialized security solutions for their cloud services.

Key job responsibilities
  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of software engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous career development.
  • Own the end-to-end delivery of software projects, from planning and prioritization through execution and operational excellence.
  • Partner with product managers, stakeholders, and cross-functional teams to define technical strategy and translate business goals into actionable roadmaps.
  • Drive engineering best practices in design, code quality, testing, and operational readiness to ensure scalable, reliable, and secure systems.
  • Manage team performance through hiring, coaching, feedback, and recognition while building a diverse and inclusive team.
  • Own operational health of production services, including on-call processes, incident response, and continuous improvement of system reliability.
A day in the life

As an SDM, your day starts with your team — a quick stand-up to unblock engineers and keep projects moving. You’ll spend time in design reviews, 1:1s, and syncs with product and partner teams to align on priorities. Expect to balance hands-on technical discussions with coaching and career conversations. Some days you’ll dig into operational issues or help shape long-term strategy. Beyond the day-to-day, you might lead hiring drives, drive org-wide initiatives, or mentor engineers outside your team. No two days look the same — and that variety is what makes the role exciting.
