Job summary

Amazon in Texas is hiring a Software Development Engineer II for the O2 Outbound Optimization team. You will design and build distributed optimization pipelines, partnering with scientists to translate models into production systems and own end-to-end delivery of impactful features.

You will work with researchers, engineers, and peers to design, test, and deploy technology that supports fast, scalable operations across AWS, with a focus on plan adherence, delivery speed, and cost minimization.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
  • 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture experience
  • 1+ years of software development engineer or related occupational experience
  • 1+ years of designing and developing large-scale, multi-tiered, multi-threaded, distributed software applications, tools, systems, and services using: C#, C++, Java, or Perl

Responsibilities

  • Design and build distributed compute pipelines that process hundreds of millions of shipments per optimization run
  • Partner with applied scientists to productionize optimization models (Lagrangian decomposition, constraint programming)
  • Own and operate production services across AWS (Lambda, Fargate, ECS on EC2)
  • Build new optimization levers — cost dimensions, constraints, and demand models in OPC
  • Develop data pipelines and validation tooling to measure business impact of optimization decisions

Job description

Have you ever ordered a product on Amazon and wondered how it got to you so fast? Did you ever think about how Amazon decides which warehouse to ship from, or whether your items should come in one box or two?

Join us in building the real-time optimization systems that make these decisions — rebalancing millions of shipment assignments every hour across Amazon's US fulfillment network to deliver packages faster, cheaper, and more efficiently.

The Outbound Optimization (O2) team, within Fulfillment Optimization (FO), is responsible for developing and operating the systems that improve upon initial fulfillment assignments at a network level. Our flagship system processes all candidate shipments in the country's network hourly, optimizing for plan adherence, delivery speed, capacity utilization, and cost — directly impacting billions of dollars in annual fulfillment spend. We are seeking a talented, driven Software Development Engineer.

As an SDE II for O2
  • You will design and build distributed optimization pipelines, partner with applied scientists to translate mathematical models into production systems, and own end-to-end delivery of features that have immediate, measurable business impact.
  • You will work with research scientists, engineers, and peers to design, develop, test and deploy technology that supports our quickly evolving and growing operations.

This role is a highly visible and critical position within Amazon with significant customer impact. A successful candidate will have an established background in building distributed systems, strong technical ability, and a motivation to achieve results in a fast-paced environment.

Key job responsibilities
  • Design and build distributed compute pipelines that process hundreds of millions of shipments per optimization run
  • Partner with applied scientists to productionize optimization models (Lagrangian decomposition, constraint programming)
  • Own and operate production services across AWS (Lambda, Fargate, ECS on EC2)
  • Build new optimization levers — cost dimensions, constraints, and demand models in OPC
  • Develop data pipelines and validation tooling to measure business impact of optimization decisions
  • Exercise judgment in making technical tradeoffs between solution quality, latency, and system complexity
A day in the life

As an SDE II on O2, you might spend your morning whiteboarding with an applied scientist on how to model a new optimization objective, then spend the afternoon turning that math into Kotlin code that will reassign millions of packages across the network. One week you're designing a new cost dimension that penalizes early shipments to unlock consolidation opportunities; the next you're building a combinatorial algorithm that generates fulfillment options faster than a commercial solver. You'll deploy your changes, watch them flow through simulations and see the business impact in dashboards within days.

You own problems end-to-end — from the math to the code to production. Your decisions directly move metrics on billions of dollars of shipment flow, and you'll feel that weight and reward daily.

Basic Qualifications
  • 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
  • 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
  • 1+ years of software development engineer or related occupational experience
  • 1+ years of designing and developing large-scale, multi-tiered, multi-threaded, embedded or distributed software applications, tools, systems, and services using: C#, C++, Java, or Perl experience
  • 1+ years of Object Oriented Design experience
  • Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
  • Experience programming with at least one software programming language
Preferred Qualifications
  • 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
Benefits that generally apply to regular, full-time employees include:
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision Coverage
  • Maternity and Parental Leave Options
  • Paid Time Off (PTO)
  • 401(k) Plan
