Amazon Data Services, Inc. in Herndon, VA is seeking a Software Development Engineer for AWS Network Firewall to design and build scalable distributed systems that protect customer networks at cloud scale.

You will work with Java, Python, and C++ across a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment. You will contribute to code reviews, operational excellence, and end-to-end lifecycle from design to monitoring, while embracing leadership principles and on-call responsibilities.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable, high-performance distributed systems that power AWS Network Firewall's traffic inspection and filtering capabilities
• Write clean, efficient, and well-tested code in languages such as Java, Python, or C++ to deliver features that protect customer networks at cloud scale
• Collaborate with senior engineers and cross-functional teams to define technical requirements, architect solutions, and drive implementation of new firewall features
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex production issues across distributed systems, contributing to operational excellence through on-call rotations and root cause analysis
• Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and documentation efforts to uphold engineering best practices and raise the bar for team quality
• Contribute to the full software development lifecycle—from design and implementation through testing, deployment, and monitoring in a CI/CD environment
• Identify opportunities to improve system reliability, performance, and security while reducing operational burden through automation and tooling

Basic Qualifications

• 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
• 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
• 1+ years of software development engineer or related occupational experience
• 1+ years of designing and developing large-scale, multi-tiered, multi-threaded, embedded or distributed software applications, tools, systems, and services using: C#, C++, Java, or Perl experience
• 1+ years of Object Oriented Design experience
• Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
• Experience programming with at least one software programming language

Preferred Qualifications

• 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
• Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
• 2+ years of any combination of the following: application security frameworks, identity and access controls, incident response, mobile security, cloud computing and security, AI security, threat intelligence, and penetration testing experience

The base salary range for this position is listed below.
