Job summary

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is seeking a Software Development Engineer to help design, implement, and maintain scalable networking software driving the backbone of AWS global infrastructure. You will work in a hybrid team combining software, systems development, and network engineering across regions (USA, Ireland, Australia) to deliver high‑performing services.

You will mentor juniors and participate in on‑call rotations while collaborating with security, operations, and other engineering teams

Qualifications

• 3+ years of professional software development experience.
• 2+ years of design or architecture experience for new or existing systems.
• 1+ year of experience as a software development engineer or related role.
• 1+ year of developing large‑scale, multi‑tiered, distributed applications using C#, C++, Java, or Perl.
• 1+ year of object‑oriented design experience.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field.
• Proficiency with at least one programming language.

Job Overview

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. As part of the Backbone Enterprise and Regional Engineering (BERE) organization, you will help build software‑defined network (SDN) solutions that support the backbone of Amazon’s global network.

You will work in a hybrid team of software, systems development, and network engineers. The role involves designing, implementing, testing, deploying, and maintaining scalable, automated service solutions. You will collaborate across regions (USA, Ireland, Australia) and partner with security, operations, and other engineering teams to deliver high‑performance, secure networking infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, implement, test, deploy, and maintain innovative solutions to improve service performance, durability, cost, and security.
• Write high‑quality distributed system software.
• Work in an agile environment to prioritize and deliver critical features.
• Collaborate closely with Network, Systems, and Software Engineering teams to roll out new designs and products and to sustain networking software tools.
• Use data to measure success, identify faults, and prevent customer impact.
• Leverage strong problem‑solving skills and cross‑team collaboration to deliver solutions.
• Document processes and procedures.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to team growth.
• Participate in a rotating on‑call schedule (one week every two months).

Day in the Life

• Work in a 24x7 on‑call rotation, taking on critical events and driving resolution.
• Travel to data center and network sites as needed.
• Engage with customers during problem resolution and maintain high alertness during scheduled work hours.
• Collaborate with internal partners to develop next‑generation platforms and tooling.

Basic Qualifications

• 3+ years of professional software development experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• 3+ years of full software development life cycle experience, including coding standards, code reviews, source control, build processes, testing, and operations.
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent.
