Job description

Overview

The GTS Wholesale Market Making Team is seeking an experienced Software Engineer specializing in Java to help build, enhance, and scale the order management systems that support our U.S. equities market-making business. This is a hands-on engineering role for someone with strong Java expertise and a practical understanding of electronic trading, order lifecycles, and production trading environments.

The successful candidate will take ownership of meaningful projects and initiatives from initial problem definition through design, development, testing, and production delivery. You will work closely with trading, operations, product, risk, compliance, and other technology teams to translate business requirements into robust, scalable technical solutions.

You will also play an active role in code reviews, system design, and architectural decisions, while maintaining a strong focus on system reliability, performance, maintainability, and overall engineering quality. This role offers direct exposure to the trading business and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on systems that are critical to day-to-day market-making operations.

GTS is a collection of financial services companies spanning a wide array of asset classes and investment approaches, all powered by the combination of market expertise with innovative, proprietary technology. With roots as a quantitative trading firm continually building for the future, the GTS family of companies are able to leverage the latest in artificial intelligence systems and sophisticated pricing models to bring consistency, efficiency, and transparency to today’s financial markets. GTS’s electronic market maker GTS Securities accounts for 3-5% of daily cash equities volume in the U.S. and is a leading Designated Market Maker (DMM) at the New York Stock Exchange, responsible for nearly $13 trillion of market capitalization. Responsibilities
  • Own projects end to end. Lead the design, development, testing, deployment, and ongoing support of significant OMS initiatives, with clear accountability for technical decisions, delivery, and business outcomes.
  • Understand the business, not just the code. Develop a deep understanding of the Wholesale Market Making business, including client and market workflows and the operational and regulatory requirements that shape system behavior.
  • Partner directly with stakeholders. Work closely with traders, desk leadership, operations, product, risk, compliance, infrastructure, and other technology teams to define requirements, challenge assumptions, prioritize work, and deliver practical solutions.
  • Raise engineering standards. Participate actively in code reviews, provide clear and constructive feedback, improve design consistency, and promote software that is testable, maintainable, observable, resilient, and performant.
  • Operate what you build. Monitor production behavior, investigate incidents, perform root-cause analysis, address structural issues, and continuously improve instrumentation, deployment safety, capacity, and recovery.
  • Contribute to technical direction. Evaluate design alternatives, identify modernization opportunities, reduce unnecessary complexity and technical debt, and help shape the longer-term architecture and evolution of the OMS platform.
Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Professional experience. 5+ years of professional software development experience, ideally including significant experience building and supporting production trading systems.
  • Java expertise. Strong command of modern Java, including multithreading, concurrency, memory management, performance analysis, testing, and the design of reliable, high-throughput systems.
  • OMS and order lifecycle knowledge. Demonstrated experience developing order management or execution management systems for U.S. equities, with a strong understanding of order state, routing, executions, cancels/replaces, market events, controls, and downstream processing.
  • Relevant market experience. Experience within a sophisticated sell-side trading technology organization, electronic market maker, or comparable environment, ideally supporting U.S. equities, retail or wholesale market making, or institutional electronic execution.
  • Production ownership. A demonstrated track record of independently owning substantive projects or workstreams and delivering production solutions across multiple stakeholders.
  • Engineering judgment. Strong design instincts, disciplined code-review practices, sound debugging skills, and the ability to balance performance, speed, risk, maintainability, and business value.
  • Academic foundation. Bachelor's or advanced degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related quantitative discipline, or equivalent evidence of exceptional technical achievement.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to explain technical issues, decisions, and tradeoffs to both engineering and business audiences.

Preferred Experience

  • Wholesale Market Making. Direct experience with retail broker-dealer order flow, internalization, price improvement, smart order routing, market access, or comparable U.S. equities execution workflows.
  • Trading protocols and connectivity. Hands-on experience with FIX, exchange or ATS connectivity, market data, drop-copy feeds, and event-driven or message-oriented architectures.
  • Market structure and controls. Working knowledge of U.S. equities market structure and the regulatory and supervisory controls affecting order handling, including Reg NMS, market-access controls, CAT, and related SEC and FINRA requirements.
  • Platform depth. Experience with Linux, distributed systems, observability tooling, continuous delivery, and automated testing.
