Job summary

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) seeks an experienced software engineering professional to lead design, development, and integration of advanced informatics solutions on strategic programs. You will mentor teams, drive process improvements, and align technology with mission needs.

The role emphasizes expert knowledge of SDLC, Agile methods, and enterprise systems integration, with responsibilities spanning API integrations, data migration, and automation to enhance efficiency and security.

What You Will Do

Supports software applications and systems by investigating, designing, documenting and implementing software solutions. Works with customers, product owners and end users to understand business needs. Develops concepts for information system solutions and evaluates the cost effectiveness of those concepts. Works collaboratively as part of a team, providing leadership and mentorship for others. Functions as a servant leader empowering other team members. Fosters strong relationships with customers, peers and service providers. Identifies and addresses productivity impediments and promotes work process improvements.

Job Duties
  1. Safety and security are a primary responsibility for all Laboratory employees. Assures safety and security compliance, maintains required safety and security training, and makes safety and security an integral part of every task, including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security.
  2. Works collaboratively as part of a team, providing leadership and mentorship for others.
  3. Identifies and addresses productivity impediments and promotes work process improvements.
  4. Devises logic procedures, flowcharts, and coding to design, develop, analyze, modify, test, debug and evaluates software to meet functional requirements for functional areas.
  5. Designs and implements data migration and system integration strategies.
  6. Designs and implements automation strategies to improve efficiency and quality
  7. Arranges, prepares and conducts meetings, workshops and presentations as required.
  8. Provides training and support to end users.
  9. Researches, assembles, and/or evaluates information or data regarding industry practices or applicable regulatory changes affecting information system policies or programs; recommends changes in development, maintenance, and system standards.
  10. Utilizes formal Agile and Scrum project management methodologies; gathers customer requirements; performs risk management functions; performs capacity and availability planning for computing infrastructure; performs effective communication both, verbal and written, at all levels.
  11. Fosters a mutually respectful and inclusive work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.
What You Need
  • Expert knowledge and experience with modern software development methodologies, tools and processes, including agile frameworks, tools and techniques
  • Expert knowledge and experience with programming languages, database design, security strategies and component integration
  • Expert knowledge and experience with automation and strategies for achieving DevSecOps
  • Expert knowledge of hardware and software integration and testing.
  • Demonstrated history of successful customer partnerships.
  • Demonstrated history of fostering a teaming environment, and providing effective leadership and mentorship for team members
  • Demonstrated history in driving process improvement.
  • Ability to translate technical terms to layperson's terms and present them to non-technical audiences.
  • Skill in working closely with customers and suppliers to define expectations and mutual responsibilities.
  • Expert Knowledge in Software Development Lifecycle, Agile Development Methodology.
  • Experience with enterprise systems integration and deployments, including API integrations.
  • Advanced knowledge of BI and Analytic technologies: MicroStrategy, SSRS, Power BI, SAP Business Objects, Executive Dashboards.
  • Advanced knowledge of LANL Project Management Information Systems Portfolio (P6, COBRA, PIF, Data Warehousing etc.).
Education

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field and 12 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be expected.

Work Location

The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM USA. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 2 years.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position

Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants

Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. Please refer to Policy Policy P701 for applicant eligibility requirements.

Incentive Compensation Program

Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
