Overview

Position Title: Social Worker – MSW, LCSW, HVIP Mental Health Provider

Location: Riley Hospital, Indianapolis, IN

Shift: 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM, Monday - Friday

The HVIP (Hospital-linked Violence Intervention Program) Mental Health Provider plays a key role in supporting violently injured patients through community-based mental health services. This position involves working with hospital and community resources to strengthen violence intervention efforts in Indianapolis. The provider collaborates with a multidisciplinary team—including medical social workers, trauma program staff, and community partners—to deliver trauma-informed, evidence-based mental health services, including cognitive behavioral therapy, trauma-focused CBT, EMDR, and aggression replacement therapy.

The provider will develop individualized care plans, coordinate follow-up, and recommend additional services for patients and their families. This is community-facing work, primarily based on referrals from the Emergency Departments and trauma departments at Riley Hospital.

Key Responsibilities

• Meet face-to-face with patients and families, providing mental health assessments, developing treatment plans, and delivering therapeutic interventions.
• Assess psychosocial risk factors, support systems, and coping abilities.
• Counsel patients and families regarding emotional, social, and financial needs.
• Serve as a point person for cases involving abuse/neglect, domestic violence, and institutional abuse, coordinating with protective services.
• Maintain principles and practices of crisis intervention and de-escalation to manage acute crises and potentially dangerous situations.
• Provide specialized mental health services, including crisis intervention, addiction assessments, and psychiatric referrals or community resources.
• Assist in managing dangerous or threatening situations through clinical intervention techniques.
• Support group development and coordination for patients and their families as needed.
• Make recommendations for additional services to the violence intervention team.
• Develop and maintain strong working relationships with hospital staff, law enforcement, APS/DCS, schools, probation, and community agencies.
• Document all clinical activities accurately in electronic medical records.
• Participate in on-call and holiday rotation schedules.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) required.
• Permanent licensure as an LCSW in Indiana required.
• 3-5 Years of relevant healthcare, mental health, or community-based experience.
• Certification in Crisis Prevention Intervention or an equivalent de-escalation training required within 6 months of hire.
• Experience with evidence-based psychosocial assessment, short-term therapeutic counseling, crisis intervention, and substance use disorder treatment.
• Knowledge of complex discharge planning to ensure safe patient transitions.
• Familiarity with state and county legal mandates related to child and adult protective services.
• Understanding of growth and development principles across the lifespan, including end-of-life care.
• Experience in adapting services to diverse populations across geographic, cultural, and financial spectrums.
• Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with hospital staff, law enforcement, community agencies, and schools.
• Proficiency in electronic medical record documentation and computer literacy.
• Availability for on-call and holiday rotations.
