Job summary

North Slope Borough School District is seeking a Social Worker to promote student well-being by delivering direct services and connecting families with community resources. The role supports learning by addressing social, emotional, and economic barriers and collaborating with educators, families, and community partners.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in social work, Psychology, Mental Health Counseling, or a related field is required or preferred.
• Five years of work experience, two of which in cross-cultural service delivery, is preferred.
• Must have (or be eligible for and/or working towards) State of Alaska Licensure in respective field.
• Experience processing and assessing referrals and Exiting students from services preferred.
• Inupiaq language, History & Culture experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide culturally appropriate individual, group, and family behavioral health services.
• Provide resource support to administrative staff, teachers, and schools.
• Refer students for ongoing care and services.
• Establish school-based goals addressing mental health and prevention needs.

Job description

Under the direction of the Director of Student Services, the Social Worker will promote and support the NSBSD Board of Education Strategic Plan and District Pedagogy. The Social Worker supports the well-being of students and families by providing direct services and connecting them to community resources. This role focuses on helping individuals overcome social, emotional, and economic barriers that impact learning and daily functioning. The Social Worker collaborates with educators, parents, and community agencies to promote student success and family stability.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Maintain competency in subject matter areas of certification and assignment. In instances where teachers are assigned to teach subjects outside of their area of preparation, training will be provided as needed.

• Provide culturally appropriate individual, group, and family behavioral health therapeutic check-in services, including mental health, behavioral health, and prevention services.
• Provide appropriate resource support to administrative staff, teachers, and schools.
• Provide appropriate and relevant referrals for ongoing care and support.
• Establishes appropriate functional, school-based goals and objectives to address student needs in the areas of mental health, behavioral health, and prevention services. Provide preventionbased services that support coping skills, groups, and telehealth services.
• Develops and provides on-site and distance therapeutic check-in services for students and families, as well as referrals, to meet the individual needs of students with behavioral and mental health needs.
• Function as a team member and collaborate with regular education, special education, and necessary school staff in planning, supporting, and providing instruction in a variety of school settings to best meet the needs of students. Coordinate inter-agency linkages as appropriate.
• Work collaboratively with other social work staff to provide prevention-based service.
• Prepare and maintain confidential records and program reports (including evaluation) and always adhere to governmental and organizational policies.
• Collaborates/consults with classroom teachers in the appropriate identification and support of mental health and behavioral health needs.
• Provide community engagement opportunities for communities.
• Provide educational programming for schools and community groups.
• Adheres to local, state, federal regulations and ethical practices, including confidentiality.
• Follow District, State, and Federal regulations and mandates.
• Be able and willing to provide services in a variety of settings including but not limited to schools, homes, or village-based schools.
• Be able and willing to travel between and among school sites throughout the district and to students' homes, as necessary.
• Perform other tasks and assume additional responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
