Job description

Provides psychosocial assessment of behavioral health patients. Offers supportive counseling and education to patients.

Essential Functions

• Group Psychotherapy:
  • Conduct educational group sessions, demonstrating good theoretical knowledge of subject matter and effective communication skills when presenting material.
  • Prepare a group topic appropriate for the patient population.
• Individual/Family Psychotherapy:
  • Provide family sessions, demonstrating sound theoretical knowledge of therapeutic principles.
  • Make referrals as appropriate.
  • Provide ongoing education to patients and families as needed.
• Abuse Issues:
  • Identify victims of abuse.
  • Know the protocol for reporting abuse.
  • Know the classes of abuse.
• Documentation:
  • Complete progress notes according to department standards.
  • Ensure progress notes reflect the patient’s progress toward short‑term goals.
  • Ensure notes are legible.
• Treatment Plan:
  • Assist with the development of individualized treatment plans for each patient.
  • Ensure plans are written according to policy and that goals are measurable.
  • Ensure plans are legible.
• Time Management Skills:
  • Demonstrate the ability to set priorities and use work time efficiently during periods of increased workload.
  • Meet deadlines consistently.
• Psychosocial Assessment:
  • Perform assessments in accordance with state/department standards.
  • Show good interviewing, diagnostic, and report‑writing skills.
• Patient Advocacy:
  • Advocate for services on behalf of assigned patients.
  • Complete forms to assist patients with appropriate entitlements.
• Crisis Management:
  • Evaluate a patient in a crisis situation.
  • Recognize warning signs of aggressive behavior.
• Mental Status Exam:
  • Conduct a thorough mental status exam.
  • Use exam findings when developing the treatment plan.
• Telephone Skills:
  • Answer calls professionally.
  • Change messages appropriately (e.g., during vacation).
• Discharge Planning:
  • Participate in the discharge planning process throughout treatment.
  • Involve family and referral sources in plan development.
• Age Specific:
  • Understand developmental stages for assigned patients.
• Trans‑Cultural Competencies:
  • Understand different cultures and belief systems.
  • Implement appropriate interventions for diverse cultures.
• Other Duties as Assigned:
  • Perform other duties in a timely and thorough manner.

Minimum Education/Certifications

Graduate degree in social work/Sociology, master’s in social work required. Licensure: NJ LSW or LCSW required.

Minimum Work Experience

One to three years of acute care setting or behavioral health experience preferred.

Physical Requirements

Full range of body motion, including handling and lifting patients and equipment. May lift up to 50 lbs. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.

Working Conditions

Requires working under stressful conditions and flexible hours. Involves discretion, independent action, and judgment.
