Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a timeline for topic selection, project development, submission, judging, and recognition.
  • Communicate social studies fair requirements, guidelines, deadlines, and expectations to participating schools, teachers, students, and parents/guardians.
  • Provide guidance and support to teachers and students regarding project development and established fair requirements.
  • Assist students in selecting appropriate social studies topics and developing meaningful research questions.
  • Provide guidance regarding historical research, inquiry, analysis, and presentation.
  • Encourage students to use credible primary and secondary sources.
  • Provide guidance regarding evaluating sources for accuracy, reliability, relevance, and historical significance.
  • Assist students in organizing research and developing evidence-based conclusions, interpretations, or arguments.
  • Provide guidance regarding proper citation of sources and preparation of bibliographies.
  • Encourage students to consider historical context, multiple perspectives, and the significance of their selected topic.
  • Review student projects prior to the fair for completeness and compliance with established guidelines.
  • Communicate necessary corrections or missing information to students and/or teachers.
  • Coordinate the collection, organization, and display of student projects.
  • Coordinate the setup and operation of the social studies fair.
  • Recruit and coordinate qualified judges and volunteers as needed.
  • Provide judges with scoring rubrics, instructions, and evaluation criteria.
  • Coordinate the judging process and maintain accurate records of scores and results.
  • Assist with determining award recipients in accordance with established criteria.
  • Coordinate student recognition and awards.
  • Assist in identifying projects eligible for advancement to regional, state, or other competitions, when applicable.
  • Assist students and teachers in preparing projects for subsequent levels of competition.
  • Maintain appropriate records related to participation, projects, scores, awards, and advancement.
  • Promote student participation in social studies fair activities.
  • Encourage equitable opportunities for student participation across grade levels and schools.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information and records.
  • Follow all applicable federal and state laws, West Virginia Department of Education requirements, and county policies and procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator.
