Social Media Specialist II

Job Summary

The Social Media Specialist II develops and implements social mediastrategies and communications initiatives for the university'sprimary institutional social media channels, consistent withuniversity marketing, communications, and brand objectives.Provides guidance and consultation to university departments andunits regarding social media strategy, content development, bestpractices, training and platform management. Supports institutionwide social media standards and compliance and contributes tocommunications efforts for sensitive or emerging issues.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:


  • Manages the design and development of university social mediacontent that supports the university's marketing, communications,branding and strategic initiatives.

  • Develops original ideas and creative approaches for socialmedia content and strategies that support university goals; ensurescontent and designs follow university branding standards and arealigned with appropriate audiences and timelines.

  • Develops and executes social media content strategies for theuniversity's institutional social media channels and recommendscontent approaches that increase engagement and support universitymarketing and communications objectives.

  • Provides guidance and support to departmental, college,program, and administrative unit social media accounts, asappropriate, and promotes consistent application of universitysocial media practices and standards.

  • Routinely monitors departmental social media accounts andensures they are maintained, updated, and evaluated foreffectiveness; present results of analysis when appropriate.

  • Monitors social media engagement, audience trends and platformdevelopments; analyzes results and recommends adjustments toimprove the effectiveness of social media content and marketingefforts.

  • Researches marketplace competitiveness and anticipates trendswithin social media platforms to identify opportunities to enhancemarketing and communications efforts.

  • Captures photos and videos for use in social mediacontent.

  • Provides training related to social media policy and providesguidance to departmental social media accounts on contentdevelopment as appropriate.

  • Develops new techniques, systems and procedures to enhance themarketing and communications efforts of the university.

  • Reviews progress and evaluates the effectiveness of organicsocial media marketing initiatives; implements improvements andpromotes best practices.

  • Supervises, trains, and coordinates the work of paid studentworkers, interns, and service-learning students supportinguniversity social media content and communicationsinitiatives.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:


  • This position requires either seven (7) years of directlyrelated full-time experience or, as an alternative, a bachelor'sdegree from an accredited institution in digital media , marketing,communications, or a related field and three (3) years of full-timeexperience directly related to the job functions.

  • Professional full-time experience in marketing, publicrelations, social media, or website development.

  • Experience with publishing, imaging, or graphics software(Adobe Creative Suite or other specialized publishing or editingsoftware) and social media monitoring software.

  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience,and/or certifications may be considered.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Professional full-time experience in marketing, publicrelations, social media, or website development.

  • Work experience in higher education

  • Proven ability to think strategically and approach challengeswith creativity.

  • Demonstrated track record of reliability, meeting goals, andholding oneself accountable.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience working effectivelyacross teams.

  • Knowledge of marketing strategies and communicationprinciples.

  • Knowledge and experience designing, implementing and assessingthe effectiveness of marketing strategies and promotionalmaterials.

  • Knowledge of and ability to post photographs to various socialmedia sites.

  • Knowledge and ability to recognize and implement video,broadcast production techniques and standards, branding andmarketing principles.

  • Knowledge and proficiency in use of publishing and designsoftware

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communicationskills.

  • Strong organizational skills and an ability to prioritize andcomplete simultaneous projects within deadlines.

  • Ability to work under pressure and meet close deadlines.

  • Ability to work successfully as both a member of a team andindependently with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with staff,faculty, students and the community in a service-orientedenvironment.

  • Ability to analyze problems and develop creative solutions tocomplex issues.

  • Ability to operate a personal computer for extended periods oftime.

  • Ability to think critically and creatively, have a highstandard of integrity, and be motivated to incorporate bestpractices into the organizational structure.

Salary: $49,800 to $55,000
