Job description

About Dotted Line

Dotted Line is an award-winning, strategically inspired creative agency focused on three core areas: brand, creative, and media. Our growing roster of national and regional clients share one thing in common: each is a highly ambitious company looking to drive sustainable growth. To support their goals, we hire top performers across creative, advertising, and communications.

Recognized as a top place to work in Virginia, Dotted Line is a values-led organization driven by our commitment to our clients, the work, and one another. Our team loves working here because of our clear vision, strong culture, collaborative process, and transparent communication. Visit us at www.dottedline.agency to learn more.

About You

You’re hungry to make things.

Funny things. Beautiful things. Strange little things that somehow work. Fast things made on an iPhone. More considered things that need a camera, some lights, and an actual plan.

You notice things. The weird sign at the gas station. A lawn ornament with more personality than most brand campaigns. Four seconds of perfect light hitting a parking garage. A transition you replay because you need to know how they did it.

You move fast. You experiment. You know when rough-around-the-edges is exactly right and when the idea deserves more polish.

Most of all, you like making things more than talking about making things.

Specifically, you:
  • Have around 2–5 years of professional experience creating social content, video, motion, digital creative, or some useful combination of the above.
  • Have a portfolio or reel that includes work made for real clients, brands, or organizations, not only personal channels or projects.
  • Have experience taking an idea from concept into actual content. You’ve made the thing, not just been in the meeting about the thing.
  • Are comfortable shooting social content on a phone, camera, or both, with a working understanding of framing, lighting, composition, and audio.
  • Have experience editing short-form video and a good instinct for pacing, hooks, sound, and storytelling.
  • Understand motion graphics, animated type, and how movement can make an edit better.
  • Have experience creating work for platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, and understand that each behaves differently.
  • Have a good visual eye and an appreciation for typography, composition, color, and design.
  • Know enough about culture and the internet to spot something interesting before it becomes a trend report.
  • Are comfortable working with client feedback, brand guidelines, deadlines, and the occasional curveball.
  • Bring curiosity, judgment, speed, and low ego.
  • Can take feedback without holding a small funeral for your idea.

Premiere. After Effects. Canva. CapCut. Final Cut. Adobe Express. Something else entirely.

Fine.

We care much more about what you can make than the software you make it in. You should be able to shoot, edit, and make graphics move.

If you can bounce comfortably between Adobe and Canva without starting a philosophical argument about it? Gold star.

About the Role

This is an Associate-level role reporting to the Executive Creative Director.

You’ll work in tandem with the Social Media Supervisor and closely across creative, social, strategy, and account teams.

You’ll be part of the conversation early, helping shape what social can be and then figuring out how to make it real.

The mission is simple: help Dotted Line make more social-first work worth noticing while expanding what we can shoot, edit, animate, and produce in-house.

In this role, you will:
  • Take ideas from concept through capture, edit, and finish across Reels, TikToks, Shorts, Stories, and whatever the internet invents next.
  • Shoot, edit, and add type, motion, sound, and visual treatments that make the work better.
  • Create content that feels native to the platform, not like campaign leftovers chopped into 9:16.
  • Bring ideas before someone asks for them.
  • Spot trends, sounds, formats, memes, and corners of culture worth exploring.
  • Help develop recurring series, formats, and experiments for Dotted Line and our clients.
  • Bring a social-first point of view into broader campaign work.
  • Partner with the ECD and Social Media Supervisor while working closely with creative, strategy, account, and social teams.
  • Know when to push a client somewhere more interesting and when the brief is telling you something worth hearing.
  • Pay attention to what people watch, skip, share, save, and talk about, then use those lessons to make the next piece better.

Creative courage is useful.

Creative courage without judgment is just a person making everyone late.

What Success Looks Like
In your first 90 days:
  • You know the lay of the land: our clients, our standards, how the teams work together, and where good ideas tend to get stuck.
  • You’re independently making client-ready social content from idea through shoot, edit, and finish.
  • You’ve built real working chemistry with the ECD, Social Media Supervisor, and the creative, social, strategy, and account teams.
  • You’re bringing ideas, references, and useful cultural observations into the room without waiting to be asked.
  • You’ve started to spot where we can move faster, make smarter, and give the work a little more nerve.
Ongoing:
  • You consistently make social-first work that feels right for the platform, the audience, and the brand.
  • You help expand Dotted Line’s ability to shoot, edit, animate, and make more ambitious content in-house.
  • You bring proactive ideas, use performance to make the next round better, and know when to make the work cleaner, stranger, or simply more alive.
  • Teams trust you to take an idea and make something real without needing a small army or fourteen meetings.
  • Health, Dental, and Vision benefits
  • Hybrid work environment
  • Unlimited PTO with 4-week minimum
  • 14 paid company holidays including the week between Christmas and New Year’s
  • Culture-building activities and a team that invests in your growth
Company Values We Live Every Day
  • Treat team members, clients, and partners like you want to be treated
  • Always be improving, learning, and growing
  • Collaborate and be a team player
  • Go the extra mile
  • Do work we are proud of
  • Focus on client results
Why Should You Apply?
  • You’ll have a real hand in shaping how Dotted Line shows up in social, not just executing someone else’s content calendar.
  • You’ll work directly with the Executive Creative Director and in tandem with our Social Media Supervisor.
  • You’ll get to make: shoot, edit, animate, experiment, pitch ideas, try weird things, and learn from what works.
  • You’ll help expand Dotted Line’s in-house social, video, and motion capabilities as the agency grows.
  • You’ll work across real client brands with real business goals while still having room to push the creative somewhere more interesting.
