Alameda Health System is seeking a SLH Manager, Med/Surg Unit to provide 24/7 administrative leadership for Patient Care Services. The role drives quality outcomes, budget considerations, and staffing plans while ensuring adherence to AHS policies.

You will lead recruitment, supervision, and performance evaluation for the Med/Surg team. The position requires a Bachelor's degree in nursing or related field, five years of progressive management experience, and a CA RN license with BLS.

• Investigates complaints, reports findings, and completes occurrence reports as needed.
• Assists in budgeting and cost controls; inspects equipment and safety in nursing areas.
• Directs staff hiring, training, scheduling, and performance evaluations; ensures adequate nursing coverage.
• Compiles and summarizes quality reports; maintains CERs and unit minutes.
• Develops unit competencies and orientation programs.

Summary

The SLH Manager, Med/Surg Unit provides administrative direction with 24-hour 7-day a week responsibility. Provides leadership to maximize the contribution of Patient Care Services through effective planning and positive quality outcomes; directs the activities and services ensuring that responsibilities and activities are carried out in accordance with AHS policies and procedures. Performs related duties as required.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each individual in the classification.

• Plans, coordinates and supervises the nursing activities of the unit and is responsible for the care on a 24-hour basis; establishes goals and objectives for the units on a short and a long-term basis.
• Facilitates patient-centered care by coordinating with unit staff, as well as with other dept. heads and their staff; establishes a plan by which each patient’s nursing care is planned, administered, supervised and evaluated by a professional nurse; promotes maximum utilization of all nursing personnel in establishing an effective staff plan.
• Effectively uses power and influence to achieve unit and organizational goals; evaluates nursing care on his/her unit to identify achievements and prevent potential problems; assumes responsibility for investigating complaints with patient, family, visitor or physicians and for reporting findings; investigates occurrences appropriately and completes occurrence reports in a timely manner.
• Participates in making recommendations for dept. budget; controls costs through economical utilization of personnel, supplies and equipment; inspects equipment, supplies and the physical layout of nursing area; makes recommendations to ensure safety in his/her area(s).
• Assists nursing personnel to plan, with the Medical Staff and other health care groups, for coordinated services to patients.
• Demonstrates ability to appropriately interview, select, hire, and terminate staff; train, motivate and develop nursing staff; supervises and evaluates conduct and skills of assigned staff; prepares an objective evaluation of job performance; responsible for preparation of time schedules, making changes and adjustments as necessary; responsible for nursing coverage of the unit(s) on a daily basis; assumes responsibility for completion/accuracy of time sheets; effectively handles employee problems and concerns by appropriately applying disciplinary procedures.
• Directs and summarizes quality reports for the unit(s); holds staff meetings and maintains minutes; assumes responsibility for the preparation of CERs; ensures that medical record deficiencies are reconciled.
• Assists in planning and presenting in-service programs specific to units; Develops unit competencies and orientation programs.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, health or business administration. Minimum Experience: Five year's progressive management experience; in a leadership/management level position and in clinical/specialty area(s). Required Licenses/Certifications: Valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of California. Required Licenses/Certifications: BLS - Basic Life Support Certification - issued by AHA-American Heart Association. Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.

Pay Range $68.29 - $113.82

The pay range for this position reflects the base pay scale for the role at Alameda Health System. Final compensation will be determined based on several factors, including but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, departmental equity, applicable collective bargaining agreements, and the operational needs of the organization.
