Skilled Laborer – Pipe Shop

Aurora, CO | $25-$30/hr + Weekly Pay + Benefits

Position Summary:

The Pipe Shop Skilled Laborer supports the fabrication and assembly of piping systems by preparing materials, operating shop equipment, moving and staging components, and assisting fabricators and pipe fitters.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Prepare pipe, fittings, and related components for fabrication.
  • Measure and mark materials accurately using tapes, squares, levels, and other layout tools.
  • Cut, bevel, grind, clean, and deburr materials according to job requirements.
  • Operate assigned shop equipment after completing required training.
  • Move, organize, and stage materials using approved lifting and material-handling practices.
  • Assist welders and pipe fitters with positioning, alignment, fit-up, and assembly.

Skilled Laborer-1 Shop Pipe:

  • Loads, unloads, sorts, and stages pipe, fittings, and fabrication materials.
  • Cleans pipe and removes rust, scale, oil, slag, and other contaminants.
  • Uses grinders and basic hand tools to prepare materials for fabrication.
  • Assists with measuring, marking, cutting, and beveling under supervision.
  • Supports pipe fitters and welders during fit-up and assembly.
  • Identifies common pipe fittings and basic pipe sizes.
  • Maintains clean, organized, and safe work areas.
  • Learns shop procedures, material-handling practices, and quality requirements.

Skilled Laborer-2 Shop Pipe: Includes All of the above plus:

  • Experienced position performing pipe preparation and fabrication-support with limited supervision.
  • Measures, marks, cuts, bevels, and prepares pipe according to work instructions.
  • Operates approved saws, beveling machines, grinders, pipe positioners, and material-handling equipment.
  • Identifies pipe sizes, schedules, materials, fittings, and flange types.
  • Reads basic spool sheets, fabrication drawings, cut sheets, and bills of material.
  • Verifies material identification and dimensions before cutting.
  • Assists with pipe fit-up, component alignment, and assembly without performing welding.
  • Recognizes damaged, incorrect, or nonconforming materials and reports discrepancies.
  • Safely stages completed assemblies for inspection, welding, testing, or shipment.
  • Advanced position performing complex pipe-fabrication support work independently and assisting with shop coordination.
  • Independently plans and completes pipe cutting, preparation, and material-staging assignments.
  • Reads and interprets spool sheets, piping isometrics, fabrication drawings, cut lists, and bills of material.
  • Calculates and verifies pipe lengths, fitting allowances, angles, and material requirements.
  • Performs advanced layout, marking, cutting, beveling, grinding, and component preparation.
  • Assists pipe fitters with complex assemblies, offsets, flange orientation, and dimensional verification.
  • Verifies pipe size, schedule, material grade, heat numbers, and component identification.
  • Coordinates material flow to help maintain shop productivity.
  • Troubleshoots fabrication-support issues and communicates discrepancies to supervision, quality personnel, or fitters.
  • Inspects prepared materials for dimensional accuracy, cleanliness, and readiness for fit-up or welding.

Minimum Physical Requirements and Accountability:

  • Work often involves extended periods of standing, walking, and performing repetitive or physically demanding tasks.
  • Effective verbal communication and hearing are essential for maintaining safety, receiving instructions, and coordinating with team members in person, over radios, or through alarms.
  • Both fine motor skills (e.g., handling small components, precision work) and gross motor skills (e.g., operating tools and heavy equipment) are critical.
  • Visual acuity is required for reading blueprints, measuring materials, performing precision work, and maintaining situational awareness; near, far, and peripheral vision may all be needed.
  • Must be able to work in a variety of environments, including indoor and outdoor settings, as well as dusty, loud, hot, cold, or potentially hazardous areas.
  • Tasks may involve bending, stooping, reaching overhead or below shoulder height, crouching, kneeling, climbing ladders or ramps, and maintaining balance on uneven surfaces.
  • Must be able to work at heights, in confined spaces, or in other challenging physical locations as required by the task.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 lbs independently.
  • Must comply with all company policies and procedures.
  • Consistent, punctual attendance during core business hours is essential.
  • Reliable transportation is required for commuting and occasional travel between local corporate offices and job sites during business hours.
