Job summary

City of Steamboat Springs seeks a Ski Patrol Director to oversee ski patrol operations at Howelsen Hill. You will supervise patrollers and EMS staff, provide medical care, and manage certifications, training, and emergency response. This is a seasonal, on-site role in Steamboat Springs, CO.

Responsibilities include coordinating pre-season setup, arena maintenance, and post-season teardown, while liaising with NSP and EMS providers to ensure safe, efficient operations and strong safety culture.

Qualifications

• Graduation from High School or GED equivalent with required EMS certifications.
• Ten years of related municipal/public safety or ski patrol experience.

Job Description

GENERAL PURPOSE Serves as the Ski Patrol Director overseeing ski patrol operations at Howelsen Hill. Responsible for supervising ski patrollers, providing emergency medical services to skiing and riding guests including medical care, search and rescue, lift evacuation, identifying and marking hazardous ski conditions, and ensuring all appropriate documentation is completed accurately and in a timely manner.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of the Howelsen Ski and Rodeo Complex Supervisor.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervises up to 15 full time, part time, and volunteer ski patrollers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Serves as an ambassador of the City of Steamboat Springs and upholds City values of Service, Teamwork, Integrity, Well-being, Respect and Compassion, while espousing safety at all times.
• Responsible for interviewing, hiring, training, scheduling, and supervising Ski Patrol and EMS staff, including overseeing all required certifications, re-certifications, refreshers, and other associated trainings.
• Oversees the completion of all necessary pre-season setup, in-season maintenance, and post-season tear-down of mountain, trail, and building areas needed for ski mountain operations, including facilities used by Ski Patrol and EMS.
• Efficiently and effectively handles all on-mountain emergencies, provides medical care, performs daily trail checks, identifies and marks potential hazards, and models and promotes snow sport safety.
• Serves as liaison between Howelsen Hill, the National Ski Patrol, EMS agencies, and hospitals to ensure proper handling of patients and patient transfers to other providers in the EMS system.
• Schedules, leads, and documents chairlift evacuation trainings and maintains all evacuation-related ropes and gear.
• Oversees all terrain features at the ski area, including daily opening/closing of the terrain park and individual terrain features as necessary, and maintains terrain park record keeping.
• Coordinates with Risk Manager to ensure City policies and procedures are implemented.
• Coordinates with representatives from the City's insurance carrier to ensure their standards are met.

PERIPHERAL DUTIES

Serves as a member of various employee committees, including the safety committee.

WORK TYPE AND SCHEDULE

Seasonal employment with daytime, nighttime, and weekend work availability.

PERKS

• Seasonal employees are eligible for Option 1: $1.50/hour end of season bonus based on total hours worked OR Option 2: for those working 20 hours or more per week are eligible for a Steamboat Resort Merchant Pass paid for by the City of Steamboat Springs in lieu of Option 1 (employees' choice).
• All employees of Howelsen Hill will be eligible to participate in the Real Deal, allowing employees to ski at most ski areas in CO.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Education and Experience: Graduation from High School or GED equivalent; Current Certificate in Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) and CPR, or equivalent (EMT); Ten (10) years of progressively responsible work related to municipal or public safety, OR ten (10) years of ski patrol/lead ski patrol experience; or Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of: Working knowledge of public risk management and loss control principles and practices; working knowledge of safety standards relating to public programs, facilities, and equipment; working knowledge of contracts and legal agreements.
• Skills: Training and/or experience in emergency patient care, mass casualty situations, lift evacuation, and toboggan handling; skill in operating designated tools and equipment.
• Ability to: Maintain efficient and effective risk management systems and procedures; analyze risks and exposures; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, city officials, vendors, claimants, and the general public; communicate effectively orally and in writing; demonstrate advanced skiing ability required to reach injured skiers on all terrain.

• Personal computer, spreadsheet and word processing software, telephone, hand-held radio, copy and fax machine.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Frequently required to sit and talk or hear. Occasionally required to walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Frequently required to work on snow-covered or wet, slippery side slopes while carrying a load. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Regularly works in outside weather conditions and extreme cold/temperatures. Frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is exposed to wet/humid conditions and vibration. Occasionally works in high, precarious places and is exposed to fumes, airborne particles, toxic/caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. Noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Pay Range

$30.68 - $37.29 Offers will be negotiated based on each candidate's qualifications.
