Alyeska Resort in Girdwood, Alaska is seeking a Ski Patrol – Level 3 to lead a high-performance team and ensure guest safety on the mountain. You will guide patrol duties, enforce policies, and manage emergencies with experienced colleagues.

Qualifications

  • Meets all qualifications and competency requirements of Ski Patrol Levels I and II.
  • Current Outdoor Emergency Care certification or Alaska EMT-1 certification or higher.
  • CPR Basic Life Support certification appropriate for the role.
  • Avalanche Professional Level 1 (Pro 1) certification.
  • Minimum of five seasons of ski patrol experience, including one season with Alyeska Ski Patrol.
  • ISC-200 or higher certification.
  • Knowledge of Alyeska terrain, operations, lift systems, and rescue procedures.
  • Senior-level competency in closing operations, Dispatch, Aid Room operations, and communication.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce safe skiing practices according to Alaska policies and resort rules.
  • Lead teammates and perform essential patrol duties for daily operations.
  • Patrol assigned areas, assess hazards, and respond to emergencies.
  • Assist in search and rescue, avalanche control, and first aid transport.
  • Oversee mountain sweeping, door closure, and evacuation procedures.
  • Participate in lift evacuation, incident investigations, and safety audits.
  • Teach patrollers about patrol operations and safety practices.
  • Coordinate with departments within the Ski Patrol chain of command.

Job description

We’re looking for Ski Patrol – Level 3 professionals to join our team in Girdwood, Alaska.

What You’ll Do

As a Ski Patrol – Level 3, you will play a vital role in providing a safe environment for guests to recreate on the mountain. As an experienced patroller, you’ll help lead your teammates and execute various duties that are crucial to the daily operations of the mountain.

Your Responsibilities Will Include
  • Enforce safe skiing practices according to the State of Alaska and Alyeska Resort policies.
  • Possess full knowledge and understanding of policies and procedures as outlined in the Patrol Manual and Operations Plan.
  • Patrols assigned areas checking ski slopes and trails daily to determine hazards and danger areas.
  • Assist in the search and rescue of lost skiers, chair lift evacuation and avalanche search and rescue.
  • Renders first aid to injured skiers and provides safe transport off the mountain.
  • Notifies medical personnel in case of severe injury where moving skier might prove dangerous.
  • Ensures that no skiers remain on slopes or trails at end of day or during inclement weather.
  • Maintains tower, post and snowmaking hydrants, and all patrol stations and storage areas.
  • Inspects ski lifts, rope tows, and chair lifts to report safety hazards and evidence of damage or wear.
  • Assist with mountain sweeping at close of season.
  • Assists in explosives handling to blast for avalanche control [under supervision of experienced blaster].
  • Participate in speed control and safety enforcement.
  • Able to locate transceiver quickly.
  • Performance of special patrol jobs.
  • Ability to handle Dispatch and Aid Room duties.
  • Route Leader for avalanche mitigation.
  • Operates Artillery pieces.
  • Resolves guest complaints according to policy.
  • Teaches other patrollers about all aspects of patrolling.
  • Assist with sweep and end of day and performs closing duties as assigned.
  • Exhibits demonstrable leadership skills.
  • Lead all departments in a coordinated Lift Evacuation.
  • Perform as Rescue Leader in an avalanche situation.
  • Accident Investigation Leader.

What We Need
  • Meets all qualifications and competency requirements of Ski Patrol Levels I and II.
  • Possesses a current Outdoor Emergency Care certification or Alaska EMT-1 certification or higher.
  • Possesses a current CPR Basic Life Support certification appropriate for the employee’s medical certification.
  • Possesses an Avalanche Professional Level 1 (Pro 1) Certification.
  • Has a minimum of five seasons of ski patrol experience, including at least one season with Alyeska Ski Patrol.
  • Possesses a current certificate of completion for ISC-200 or higher.
  • Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of Alyeska’s terrain, operations, lift and tram systems, patrol facilities, rescue systems, emergency access routes, and departmental plans and procedures.
  • Demonstrates senior-level competency in closing operations, Dispatch, Aid Room operations, work-run quality control, incident documentation, guest service, and interdepartmental communication.
  • Completes all required Patroller III medical, lift evacuation, rope rescue, incident investigation, vehicle, and Snow Safety qualifications.
  • Completes at least three approved Patroller III elective qualifications identified on the current advancement checklist.
  • Demonstrates the ability to instruct, mentor, and evaluate other patrollers in disciplines for which the employee is trained and approved.
  • Demonstrates the ability to lead designated operations while working within the established Ski Patrol, Snow Safety, and resort chain of command.
  • Completes a long-term patrol project and demonstrates appropriate planning, communication, implementation, and follow-through.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Advancement to Ski Patrol Level III requires successful completion of all Patroller III Checklist sign-offs and approval through the established performance review, peer review, and final management review process.

Physical demands

  • Demonstrate strong skiing and toboggan handling skills
  • Ability to lift/carry and ski with minimum load of 75 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to assist with patient handling, assessment, and transportation over steep, variable, and ice or snow-covered terrain.
Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to high, precarious places and inclement weather conditions.
