Job description

The Site Superintendent is responsible for overseeing all surface‑level field operations associated with a large, complex urban transit infrastructure project. This role provides direct leadership to field crews and subcontractors performing earthwork, utility relocations, excavation support, concrete placement, roadway restoration, site logistics, and traffic maintenance activities.

Working in close coordination with Project Management, Engineering, Safety, and Quality teams, the Surface Superintendent ensures that surface construction activities are executed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with contract documents, project schedules, and regulatory requirements. This is a field‑based leadership role requiring strong experience managing heavy civil surface works in dense urban environments with active public interfaces.

The Site Superintendent’s key responsibilities are:

Site Operations & Supervision
  • Supervise and coordinate all daily surface construction activities, including excavation, grading, utilities, concrete work, paving, site restoration, and temporary works.
  • Direct field crews and subcontractors to ensure work is performed in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, and work plans.
  • Plan and manage daily work sequencing to maintain productivity while coordinating with adjacent project areas and stakeholders.
  • Identify and resolve constructability challenges, field conflicts, and differing site conditions impacting surface operations.
  • Ensure surface work supports overall project milestones and interfaces effectively with underground construction activities without direct responsibility for tunneling or cavern works.
Safety, Quality & Environmental Compliance (HSE / QA/QC)
  • Enforce all OSHA, project‑specific, and client safety requirements; lead daily toolbox talks and site safety briefings.
  • Monitor field operations to ensure compliance with safety plans, traffic control plans, and environmental protection measures.
  • Oversee quality control for surface construction activities, including excavation limits, backfill, concrete placement, and restoration.
  • Support safety inspections, audits, and corrective actions in coordination with project safety staff.
  • Ensure surface operations comply with environmental permits, dust control, noise mitigation, and erosion and sediment control requirements.
Planning, Scheduling & Administration
  • Assist with short‑interval planning, look‑ahead schedules, and coordination of manpower, equipment, and materials.
  • Track daily production, labor hours, equipment utilization, and quantities installed.
  • Maintain accurate daily field reports, logs, timesheets, and material tracking documentation.
  • Support cost control efforts by monitoring productivity and identifying opportunities for efficiency improvements.
Logistics, Traffic & Urban Interface
  • Coordinate surface logistics in constrained urban conditions, including material deliveries, equipment staging, and access control.
  • Oversee implementation of traffic maintenance plans (MPT), pedestrian protection, and coordination with local agencies.
  • Interface with inspectors, utility owners, and regulatory authorities related to surface construction activities.
  • Manage public‑facing work zones with an emphasis on safety, cleanliness, and minimal disruption.
Communication & Coordination
  • Serve as the primary surface field liaison with Project Managers, Engineers, Safety, Quality, and Inspection teams.
  • Communicate daily progress, issues, and risks to project leadership.
  • Coordinate multiple trades and subcontractors to avoid interference and maintain efficient work flow.
  • Support resolution of field issues through collaboration with engineering and construction management teams.
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or construction management preferred, or equivalent field experience.
  • Minimum of 12–15 years of progressive experience in heavy civil construction.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing field crews and subcontractors on large infrastructure or transportation projects.
  • Strong knowledge of construction methods, including excavation support, utilities, concrete, paving, and site restoration.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and schedules.
  • Proficiency with construction management software (e.g., Procore) and Microsoft Office.
  • OSHA 30‑hour Construction Safety certification (or equivalent) required.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem‑solving skills.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to lead crews in active construction zones with heavy equipment and public interfaces.
  • Strong coordination skills across multiple subcontractors and disciplines.
  • Ability to adapt work plans in response to changing site conditions and schedule demands.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, and environmental compliance.
  • Ability to work in rotating shifts (including nights and weekends) in confined, underground spaces with exposure to dust, noise, and vibration.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with ability to maintain clear and organized records.
  • Problem‑solving mindset with the ability to respond to real‑time field conditions and make decisions under pressure.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Work is primarily performed at active construction sites, including underground and surface environments.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, and climb for extended periods; navigate uneven ground, scaffolding, and ladders; and work around heavy equipment.
  • Exposure to noise, dust, vibration, confined spaces, and varying weather conditions is common.
  • Requires regular use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hats, safety boots, high‑visibility clothing, and eye/ear protection.
  • Ability to perform site inspections, monitor field activities, and respond quickly to safety or operational issues in physically demanding conditions.
  • Flexibility to work extended hours, nights, weekends, and rotating shifts as project demands require.
  • Occasional office‑based work is required for reviewing documents, preparing reports, and coordinating with project management teams.
