Job summary

Gilbane in The Bronx seeks a Site Safety Manager to lead on-site safety for a major project. You will drive SSP compliance, coordinate with DOB inspectors, and advance a proactive safety culture with a focus on hazard recognition and prevention.

You will manage safety reporting, training, and contractor coordination, while developing direct reports and maintaining excellent safety metrics on schedule-sensitive work.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in safety, construction management, engineering, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum 4–7 years NYC construction safety on projects with an approved SSP.
  • Valid NYC DOB SSM license (required).
  • CHST, OSHA 30‑hour, SST Supervisor Card and related NYC safety credentials.

Responsibilities

  • Supports all safety operations on the project and promotes Gilbane Cares safety culture.
  • Preplans safety with trade contractors via scope reviews and JHA/PTP processes.
  • Maintains safety documentation and conducts inspections and audits.
  • Coaches teams on hazard recognition and corrective actions using HammerTech.
  • Leads safety meetings, trainings, and ensures appropriate PPE and resources.
  • Coordinates with DOB inspectors and clients to ensure compliance.

Responsibilities
  • Supports all safety operations on the project and promotes the Gilbane Cares safety culture
  • Ensures trade contractor activities are preplanned for safety through scope review, preconstruction meetings, JHA reviews, Pre-Task Plans (PTPs), High Risk Activity workplans, etc.
  • Ensures contractors meet Gilbane safety submittal requirements
  • Ensures trade contractors compliance with Gilbane safety plan & expectations
  • Maintains all safety related documentation
  • Makes recommendations concerning situations hazardous to employee Safety and Total Worker Health
  • Utilizes HammerTech to audit and monitor project team implementation of the Safety Plan
  • Perform High Energy Control Assessments, OSHA-Specific Inspections and Site Logistics Inspections
  • Provides and analyzes HammerTech trending reports with project team and develops action plans
  • Coaches project teams in effective hazard identification/recognition and correction of issues using HammerTech Inspections/ Observations
  • Investigates all accidents/near misses and complete all paperwork required
  • Ensures project teams have safety equipment and resources
  • Serves as project liaison and manages project correspondence with Insurance carriers
  • Provides safety training to project teams on Gilbane, client, and OSHA requirements
  • Trains direct reports on processes, procedures, and completion of daily tasks
  • Manages workload and performance of direct reports, ensuring alignment with overall company standards
  • Fosters a positive and inclusive work environment to motivate and engage team members
  • Aids in communicating company and department strategy to direct reports
  • Collaborates closely with business development to ensure seamless integration with sales strategies including performance metrics on your assigned projects, pursuits, and client deliverables
  • Actively participates in opportunities to strengthen client, partner, and industry relationships that position Gilbane as the “Builder of Choice”
Qualifications
EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION
  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field preferred
  • Minimum 4–7 years of NYC construction safety experience on projects requiring an approved Site Safety Plan (SSP) under NYC DOB regulations
  • Valid NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) Site Safety Manager (SSM) License, active and in good standing (required)
  • CHST Requirement — Candidates must hold, or be able to obtain, the CHST credential within six months of their start date.

  • OSHA 30‑Hour Construction Safety Certification (required)
  • Valid Site Safety Training (SST) Supervisor Card in accordance with Local Law 196
  • NYC major building, alteration, or demolition experience preferred
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and NYC‑specific experience accepted
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Comprehensive working knowledge of NYC Building Code Chapter 33, NYC Administrative Code §3310, OSHA regulations, and DOB rules related to construction safety
  • Ability to implement and enforce Site Safety Plans (SSPs)
  • Proficient in identifying existing and potential jobsite hazards, issuing corrective actions, and exercising stop‑work authority when necessary
  • Experience coordinating with DOB inspectors, general contractors, construction managers, and trade contractors during inspections, audits, and enforcement actions
  • Strong documentation skills, including daily site safety logs, inspection reports, incident reports, and corrective action tracking
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and familiarity with DOB NOW documentation requirements
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to conduct safety meetings, toolbox talks, orientations, and regulatory briefings
  • Ability to lead safety meetings and coordinate with contractors and DOB inspectors

Salary to be determined based on factors such as geographic location, skills, education, and/or experience of the applicant, as well as the internal equity and alignment with the team. For New York City this ranges from $120,000-155,000 plus benefits and retirement program.
